Looking at '06 MS6...gawd what is that SMELL?

Looking at a lightly-driven 06 MS6 (3K miles) which I may want to buy...

Test drove it the other day, and had the usual 'issues' adjusting to the 'Type A' (according to VIN) clutch...basically, a couple of jerky starts in 1st before I got the hang of it.

Hadn't gone more than ~2 min when this horrible odor permeates the cabin...like something you'd find coming out of an industrial smoke stack, with a bit of organic rotting-fish putrescence mixed in. I figure it's clutch lining.

I like the car, but can someone tell me what is the deal & likely prognosis with that gawdawful smell? I understand there's a TSB to address clutch feel and engagement--but does that take care of the odor problem? I've driven sticks the whole time I've been licensed and never had this kind of issue with a clutch.

Basically either this is something that goes away/is fixable, or I don't want the car...I can't subject the better half to this, and I'm not crazy about it myself :(

Mine smelt like s*** for a little while and mine has about 6,000 miles now i believe and the smell has been gone for a while. It did smell really bad at first though. I thought I was burning something or fryin the clutch. Good car but the issues people are having with surging and with turbo seals along with the clutch needing to be replaced I would get a kia instead. Seriously! But good luck either way!

thats that rubber(or other material) heatshield underneath the hood. it smells funky for awhile because the car is brand new. it goes away after awhile

Thanks...sounds like there are other things it could be besides clutch then. Owner mentioned some kind of coating(?) on the engine. Car is type A and will need the clutch tsb service, probably.

What do y'all consider a reasonable deal for a private-party 06 GT, 3k mi, no nav, in mint-ish condition?

I know what edmunds/kbb say, but I've read so much about poor sales figures and big incentives on these limited production MS6's that it's hard to know how much faith to put in such numbers.

i have never heard of this smell caused by a "coating" on the engine. Sounds like BS to me.

If you ride or burn the clutch you will know it...it stinks. Practice makes perfect.

its a coating under the hood.

its has a funky smell for awhile after the engine warms up

Was the a/c or vents on? My car will have a sulfer type fish smell when I first turn on the auto climate. (pukey)

its the clutch. Stop giving stupid assumptions.

fish smell = burnt clutch.

easy as that. That's the car's harsh way of telling you to learn to drive the 'Type A' clutch.

I drove it just fine. It smelt just like my Toyota Tacoma Xrunner did when i bought it brand new. All cars do that when u by them. BUT it could be the clutch if he is burning it up.....

It was the clutch. On my test drive I tried to take off from a stop sign in 3rd, b/c I wasn't used to the shifter detents--my old SE-R's stick flops right over to the 1st/2nd gate but the MS6 stays in 3/4 unless you push.

I went ahead & bought it anyway...no recurrences yet!

yep, I remember that smell when I first bought it. I comes back everytime I fcked up on the clutch. So the "fish" smell, is the clutch. Unless you're confusing it with the brand new car smell...then I dont now why it would smell like fish lol

I remember the clutch smell too! This clutch just takes some getting used to, I haven't had anyone drive mine without killing it on the first try ha ha, I even warn them about it.

Funny--we bought without my wife having tried it out. Last night we took it out for her to get used to, so I say, "Now, you're going to kill it the first couple times or so, just like I did."

She nods, points it into traffic...and nails the takeoff (doh)

@ the next stop, she killed it. Felt much better then. (wrc)

Oh, that. I guess it showed up after all. I tried embedding it in my sig awhile ago & never saw it so I'd thought it wasn't working. Anyway, yep, it's me, courtesy of SingSnap. (headbang)

Guess I need a liability disclaimer on that puppy.

You want a SS invite, lemme know...beware tho, it's addictive.

Well, i didnt burn up the clutch when i got mine so maybe thats why i think he means the smell of the new engine. I just killed it everytime i stopped... haha. But THAT SINGING HURTS MY EARS TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I HOPE THATS A JOKE!!!?!?!?!?!?!?

Yeah, I had the burning clutch smell. Did it no matter how well you drive the car. You ride it for 2 seconds the clutch burns. I got the TSB done, and clutch smell GONE. I believe the TSB is important to have done because I truly believe the longevity of the clutch is greatly increased with getting this done. Easier clutch= longer life. Clutch smell= premature wear. Good luck. :)
