Lexus or Mercedes?

Thanks guys - keep 'em coming. I plan on printing your responses to show to Eleni's father (a.k.a. my future father-in-law) who stubbornly insists she should get a Mercedes. Oh, did I mention he's had umpteen problems with it? Greeks seem to dig the BMW and Mercedes cars - yeah, maybe it's a generalization to an extent, but it seems to be true. Dimitrios, would you agree?

I would agree; it's the "European" mentality and it's hard to win against - apparently Amstel and Heineken are the best beers on the planet too; it's similar to a red blooded "American" that will buy nothing but Budweiser and believes the Chevy S10 was/is the best pickup ever made. My dad's never owned a Mercedes, but we get into some relatively heated arguments over the inherent quality of Lexus/Acura/Infiniti vs the Audi/MB/BMW camps.

I guess the other thing is you havent' said what price or size you're looking at. The city can be abusive, as I'm sure you know. So something smallish yet has some utility and is luxury laden could be a benefit and my personal recommendation.
That said, A3 A3 A3 A3 A3 A3 A3 A3 A3 A3 A3 A3 ...(nana)

BTW, when should we all be expecting your bachelor party invites? *cough* Chicagoland Indoor Racing *cough*

I would also have issues marrying a girl who lets family peer pressure get to her so much. You're the man. You TELL her what car she's getting. My wife got to pick the color and transmission. She was getting a 626, whether she wanted it or not.

I would *almost* agree with that, but I'd love to have my girl actually have interest in her choice of vehicles (especially "enthusiast" types of vehicles). I would say that you should try to keep the family out of those decisions; after all, who's going to be driving it every day?...did I mention A3 already? :D (get some snow tires and you'll be golden).

Yes, Chi Indoor Racing again, soon please!

lakersfan, if I TOLD my wife what car she was getting, regardless if she wanted it or not, id would have my ass kicked quite quickly. and rightfully so...

seriously, id go for either an acura tl, audi s4, infiniti g35, or the new IS. the IS250 comes in AWD & 6-speed manual.

Yeah the Acura TL is nice but it is still a honda in the end. Michael go with the IS or G35.

Actually, the main question is "Who's Paying for it?"

If you're paying for it, then what you say goes and the family can STFU

but if they're paying for it, then hey, by all means, get whatever the hell they want

Hell, if they're paying for it all I've got to say is ........ does she have a sister, and I'll take my Miata in blue with a stickshift, thanks.

I think we've gone down that road on here (about her having a sister and all); I'm sure finances aren't an issue here.

when the person (ILMP5) who works in warranty/service at mercedes posts in this thread that the cars are junk, that alone should say something

So, we got into a big fight tonight. Eleni says I'm being "controlling", when in fact I'm only trying to be helpful. I was THIS close to saying, "Your father is the one who is being controlling," but I backed off out of respect for her and for him. With my engineering background, I think I would be the one to *know* more than him. She really made me mad tonight (other issues came up too) - I'm thinking about going to sleep in Marley (my car) tonight (with the heat on, of course). I need to get away for awhile so I won't say anything I might later regret - it's how I deal - let the steam blow off and THEN have the talk. She and I have good communication, but boy, when we argue, it's intense. Then, to further irritate me, she throws in Greek words here and there 'cause she knows I don't understand. She said something to the effect of, "I'm going to hit you over the head with a 'catsarolla' [phonetically] to knock some sense into you!" I didn't know whether or not to take her seriously, so out the door Michael went for a walk in this freakin' cold weather. Translation? Dimitrios? (pissed)

Ok, she basically said she'd hit you with a pot (katsarolla) - it's an old school technique and you should be privelaged to be given a concussion with such a time honoured tradition :D

You have a PM with my thoughts.....
