4.3:1 versus 4.1:1 final drive ratio isn't going to amount too much. I have an entire spreadsheet of transmission ratio calculations for my RX-7 for when I swap in Miata gears and a 4.3:1 rear end and the end result is only like 200-300 RPM. Personally, I'd rather have the higher ratio for the occasional track day.

I don't think it amounts to too much on paper, but it's multiplying your effective power, so I think the difference would be appreciable head to head. If bolt ons make a noticeable difference, I think this would, too. The difference between a 4.3 and a 4.1 is minimal, but every bit helps. If you save 1 lb in 20 different areas, it adds up (same theory). With a motor that revs to the sky anyway, I'd spring for the shorter gears.

I agree, and that's why I want to go to a 4.3:1 from a 4.1:1.

However, you guys were talking about highway driving and from the site Phen posted it's less than a 200 RPM difference between the 4.1:1 and 4.3:1. So in the end you'll get a little better acceleration at the expense of top speed (LOL, Protege) and MAYBE a little fuel economy. I was just saying the tradeoffs seem pretty obvious to me. Maybe I should spring for that 4.875:1 ring and pinion Mazdatrix offers :D

If I'm not mistaken, the 5th gear ratios are different between the probe and 626, so the effect will be compounded when it's multiplied through the final drive ratio. I think that's why the Probe guys want the 626 5th gear. I know the difference between my 626 and Miata (4.1 and 4.3 respectively) is pretty noticeable rpm-wise on the highway. I think this points more to the fact that the 626 just has a longer 5th, not so much the difference in the final drive.

Congrats on the engine!! I need to see this beast!

Also, you got new wheels? What are they?

As far as the transmission, it's a trade off. Weigh the pros and cons of having short gears. Think about how often you will be on the highway in top gear. I'm going to guess you will be there 98% of the time. The other 2% will be on the track (maybe not even that much). If you can deal with higher 5th gear RPMs, then get shorter gears. I'm not very knowledgeable about gears and trannys, but if it's possible to swap in a long 5th gear or something to lower the rpms, do that!

Just thought of something.

Evan, did you ever get out of 4th at Mid-Ohio on the back straight? I ask because I know I hit ~110 mi/hr in the RX-7. I know the Proteges make less power but IIRC 110 mi/hr is just about the top of 4th. I would think with more power and stock Protege gears that would put you in a pretty bad place back there (I'm sure Marlon could chip in with more experience). Maybe a little longer gears wouldn't hurt on the track after all.

Just swap the 5th gear. Run the engine to 7200 or so, and you should be fine..you could also opt for a PAR 4th gearset and get a custom 4th gear ratio..Or even a PAR final drive gear with a 4.30 final or so..

Thanks for all the transmission info guys, but honestly a lot of it is going over my head.

So would a KLZE transmission work okay? It's just a JDM MX-6 tranny and they are easily found on eBay for $300 +shipping. Then I'm planning on saving for the MFactory LSD ($650). And a lightweight flywheel and good clutch kit. After pulling the stock flywheel from a 1.8 FP(?) motor this weekend I definitely want to go with a lightweight one, or at least the MX-3 flywheel. Then followed but research on a good clutch kit. I don't plan on anything with crazy numbers, just a Stage1 or OEM style replacement for a MX-6 will be just fine.

And I got the motor today at work and it arrived safely and looks pretty good. I'm going to borrow my friends van and bring it home hopefully this week then put it up on the engine stand and inspect the internals. But a peek through the oil cap looks really good so far. (fingers crossed).

It will, but a JDM transmission (or ZE transmission) is exactly the same to a stock USDM transmission. IMHO, there is no reason to spend money on a JDM transmission...even if it is a JDM LSD trans (which 99% of the ones up for sale are not). Just save your money and get a MFactory LSD. Also might try to get your hands on a transmission brace if it will still work in a P5. They are a nice piece and can be had on PT, or MX6.com. I really like my ACT HDSS clutch/PP that I have, fwiw. And I recommend the Fidanza or a turned down mx3 flywheel.

Put up pics of the cam stampings, head stampings, that will help tell for sure what it is.

Yeah, I assumed the JDM tranny was basically the same as the USDM tranny, it's just that the JDM ones are easier to buy/ship and in better condition then most of the crap the junkyards try to sell around here so that's why I was thinking of going that route. There are a few LSD versions on eBay but I'm still holding out for an MFactory LSD, no worries. I just gotta find someone to install it that knows what they're doing.

I already snagged a tranny brace from eBay, it's sitting on my parts shelf. ;)

There a few Fidanza lightweight flywheels for sale on PT right now. They all seem to have some surface rust but after seeing an OEM Protege flywheel this weekend covered in rust, I'm not too worried about the rust now. 1/2 price is very tempting on a flywheel.

I'm bringing the motor home from work tomorrow then I'll start working on it this weekend and taking lots of pics, mostly for reference for myself when putting it all back together. Those vacuum lines can get confusing quickly!

Here's my new favorite pic of the KLZE. heh-heh

Very cool. Keep us updated and if you have questions feel free to ask! Oh and have you checked the stampings on the heads/cams?

I haven't gotten it home yet to start unbolting. She's coming home with me tonight so that's the first thing I'm checking after she's on the engine stand. I read that thread PorscheKLZE made on PT about what to look for when buying a KLZE so I've got his checklist.

And I also spent more of the evening cleaning the garage last night. I just have to organize the bench tonight. It's so much nicer having a place for everything. I'll post before and after pics. haha

Go with an Exedy Stage 1 and the Fidanza Flywheel......great combo.

Fidanza ftw!!

When my stock clutch goes...I will definitely spend the money and get a Fidanza. My friend replaced his in his Prelude and I got to compare the stock and fidanza...I could stick my pinky through the middle of the fidanza and spin it haha. Very light indeed.

Good deal, Mike is a great source for information. He and I talk all the time about some of the projects we are working on and compare notes. So if you have a checklist that he posted you are set.

I still say ACT HDSS for your setup, but it is all personal preference for this type of application.
