Level 2 Charging experience (CX-90 PHEV)

Since my last post, I filled the tank once: ~1,400 miles on 9 gallons, averaging 152 MPGe.

$200/mo in gas 😮

Surely the equivalent amount in electricity is not negligible.

I drive about 1,200 miles a month. I use premium so that’s $4.20 a gallon. On the long distance trips where I’ve run gas only, the hwy mileage was 26.1 MPG. I’m assuming my rural driving is less than the highway mileage, but if I use that figure to calculate what I would spend solely on gasoline… 1,200 / 26.1 would approximately 45 gallons of gas used. 45 x $4.20 = $189 monthly for gas.

in May, according to my charger app, I used 230 kW. Multiply that times the rate of $0.11661000 (from our electric bill, this is the higher, peak time rate) = $26.82. Someone tell me if I’m not calculating that correctly but it looks like the cost to keep the battery charged is less than $30 / month.

There is a different between kW (KiloWatt) and KWh (KiloWatt-Hours).

kW is power/rate = how much power(kW) is used
kWh = Quantity or Energy

I don't believe you can just do the math as you've done. Someone smarter than me can help.

How I did it to see if I would save money against my current gas car was (using your numbers):

Electric:
  • Electric Rate/kWh: 0$.1166 kWh
  • Car battery size: 17.8 kWh
  • Cost to charge battery from 0-100: $2.075 (17.8*0.1166)
  • Cost per mile (assuming battery gives you 26 miles before depleted): $0.08 (2.075/26)
Compare this to your gas equivalent

For me, my average gas only MPG is 15 (at best). My cost of electricity is higher. My cost per mile is marginally better for the Electric but with the added benefit of gas backup (which I did not factor in, since 95% of my driving is City only), a PHEV makes sense.

Are people using Premium fuel with their 90's?

Is it required?
I have been using Premium but with Harris Teeter/Kroger they offer a heavy discount as long as your buy groceries there. I save a substantial amount at Harris Teeter/Kroger this way. In same cases it's a better discount than Costco.

I do find the engine smoother running than using 87 or 89 octane Fuel
