Im thinking about going to into law enforcement (not police but something like the fbi or some such other agency) any thoughts or reccomendations on the subject?

my boyfriends dad works for border patrol... he has the COOLEST JOB EVAR and he gets to travel alot. p.s. theyre always hiring

1. get a degree
2. find the paperwork and get started. the paperwork most times will tell you what you need to qualify and do to get in.
3. get in shape now. save yourself embarassment when you go into training.

as far as "in shape", is it going to be a strength issue or just a stamina kind of thing, i can run forever run sub 7 minute miles and such things but im not the strongest person ever. describe in shape.

in shape.. to go to training you have to run 1.5 miles in 13 minutes since you ar a guy.

Then when you get there you have to run 2 miles in 20 minutes.. You are going for points so you want to be able to run it in less.

heres a link.. you need to start doing the workout they describe 1 year before going. You'll have plenty of things to stress about while you are there.. Physical fitness shouldn't be one of them https://www.fbijobs.com/PreQuanticoKit/chapter00.htm

My family has a background in law enforcement. They all seem to love it. They keep becoming cops and investigators and I keep running from them. Its not a bad job at all. :)

my grandpa was obsi for 6 years then chief of police for noble, ok for another 5, my dad is a us postal inspector, so its kinda a family thing here too, most of the rest of the family is in the military or insurance (dont ask me where insurance comes from)

lol. I was going to get into criminology in college but I decided to go the medical route myself. I think law is a great profession and if you have a passion for it by all means do it man!

thats one mistake that a lot of aspiring FBI Agents make.. They get a criminal justice degree.. and then they wonder why its so hard for them to get in. They dont realize that the FBI will give them the CJ training they need. The FBI wants specialized experience.... Computers, Biology, Medical, Languages and such....

Not saying that's what u were doing at all

go to school get all the best grades, keep a VERY clean record and train yourself well for everything youll go through. Theres a movie thats about the CIA and its training and its very on the nail with alot of things that go on. ill try to find it...

i've thought about this too, i just don't know if they'd be able to pay me enough. i'm going to have a lot of loans coming out of college, a car to pay for, and a place to live that i'll need to pay for. as interested as i am, i don't know if i could make the pay sacrifice. i've also thought about the military cause i think they help pay for student loans, but i don't think i wanna go to iraq next year

the pay isn't the best at first.. but Special agents get 25% over all GS levels. They have REALLY good benefits and you can retire after 20 years and do anything you want. You can usually defer the loans since you will be in 16 week training program for a job. during that time you can cancel car insurance too (if you have a decent insurance company). They pay is good in comparison to most out of college jobs and much better than just about all law enforcement jobs.

is it comparable to 55k/year? if i get into this program at this job that's what the pay is, if not it'll be slightly less at a regular full time position here as long as they offer me a job and i actually want to work here. i'll have a bs in cs from wpi with an mis minor with like a 3.8gpa, total time of experience in the IT industry of ~1.5 years, have worked for 4 fortune 500 companies (2 insurance, 1 aerospace and 1 investing) and 1 australian gov't agency. fitness requirements look relatively easy for soccer we had to do 2 miles in 12 mins was what our coach wanted us to get, i got 12:30 with little training (i knew i was in shape enough to play games so didn't really train much more), and i've been lifting a good bit since then. retiring at 41 sounds pretty sweet, and it looks like the jobs that get done are cool. so where could i find out more info on what i could actually do in the fbi with a cs degree?

There are two computer departments.. Internal and External.. Internal is for maintenance of FBI network. External includes information technology specialist that do forensic work such as writing programs and investigating confiscated drives.. There's more to it, but that is the jist of it. Im on the forensics side.

Things to think about.
The FBI may not pay that much to start, but they are working very hard to make computer salaries more competitive in comparison to working at private companies. At current levels within 10 years you can be at the $80,000 range. If computer salaries go up like we expect.. you can expect more.

What room for advancement does the other company offer. You are not limited in the FBI and are even encouraged to continue schooling while you work.

Screw that, join the Army, goto SF training. Learn to become gOD (Sniper) and you can ahve any job you want in the Fed govt. :D
