It looks like Ford's premium brands, Jaguar and Land Rover, will end up in the hands of a company rabidly trying to both seal a deal to boost national pride as well as to develop and promote a $2,500 car. Ford Motor Co. is expected to announce this week that Tata Motors is the preferred bidder for the two companies. A final deal is anticipated in early 2008, with Tata expected to pay around $2 billion to acquire both companies. Now there's just one final question: should the $2,500 car be a Rover or a Jag? Goodbye to Land Rover and Jaguar. I guess I will never get to own a new one in my life time. Good riddance to American Automakers.

It's kinda funny that Britain's former colonies are play hot potato with their two biggest auto brands.

I think the $2500 car should be bare bare bones Land Rover w/ cloth top and a turbo diesel. I'd love to have one.

You would think a British group or company would save Jaguar...I'm very concerned about this being a Jaguar fan...If this goes through...I hope Tata just throws a ton of money at Jag and puts someone who knows what they hell they are doing in charge!

Bring back the designers from the previous gen Jags...The 90's XJ6/8 body was one of the most elegant sedans ever designed IMO.

It seems to be getting closer:

Tata closes in on Jaguar takeover

Detailed talks with Tata are underway, says Ford. Ford has confirmed that India's Tata Motors will be the likely buyer of its UK-based Jaguar and Land Rover brands.

How do Tata XF or Tata LR2 sound to you? (lol2)

I wish Prodrive bought Jaguar and Land Rover when they purchased Astin Martin.

I read somewhere about a rumor that Lotus is for sale.

At least I hope Tata keeps the name, legacy and tradition behind those 2 brands. I think the value is in there, just management has been bad. Tata should just be an investment engine/parent who I hope leaves those brands "alone" to continue doing their business...

Well, just cause it's an Indian company doesn't mean they will butcher the brands to hell.

I agree with that. Just have to wait and see, I just hope they don't go over board with the designs. I'm Indian and have faith Tata will do a superb job in bringing back Jaguar ...

Well, just cause it's an Indian company doesn't mean they will butcher the brands to hell.

I agree. I believe it is not related to the parent's company nationality (remember when Ford bought Land Rover and Jaguar, right?). I'd rephrase: Any final new "owner" should bank in the legacy/tradition/design of the brands instead of trying to change them completely...

Heck, what global market company can you claim is purely Brit, Japanese, American, German, Indian, Chinese, etc. nowadays? Very few. All of them are an investment melt pot.
