Looking for all season - have narrowed down to Kumho ECSTA ASX or Toyo Proxes 4? Both cost about the same. Which would you choose and why?

Thanks!

What are the other choices (Brands) for stock tire size. I am also considering new tires and want a more comfortable and quieter ride and hopefully better traction for all seasons tires.

BFGoodrich, GoodYear and Michelin (195 50 R16) do not have this size.

Any help would be appreciated.

I like the Kuhmo's , I have them on both my stock wheels and my rotas.

Rudy, tires.com and tirerack.com. They have listings for the cars. There just aren't many tires in this size.

My first choice was the Toyo's for reputation sake, but Toyo didn't have them in stock. I waited 6 weeks...thanks Toyo for nothing! (yupnope) So I got the Kumho's. They are alright. They are awesome in the rain. In they snow they are...well....an all season tire...so OK. On dry pavement I would say that they don't stick as well as the OEM Dunlops did but I am happy with the purchase. (mswerd)Reasoning for choice of these two tires was price and rain affectiveness.

You can also fit 205/50/16, 215/45/16, 205/55/16, 195/55/16, 205/45/16 on the stock wheel no problem. I've personally had 195/50, 195/45, and (now, for winter) 205/55.

With all those sizes, the price goes down a lot.

Thanks for the links and info.

If 205 fits on the stock 6" rims, it adds a lot more choices. This would also fill out the wheel wells a bit more.

yep 205 would fit fine, and 205/50 would probably be the closest match

The Proxes 4's kick ass. Better than the stock Dunlops in every way. They do have them in our stock size. at 32 psi they are nice and quiet ride. But the only weakness on this tire seems to be a flexible sidewall. At 36 front and 34 rear, they feel ok.

Got a chance for snow driving the last couple of days. They did fine. They aren't snow tires, but they will definitely do. Just don't drive like a moron. Much better than the Toyo TPT's. Those things are POS. I would prolly recommend the 205 45 16's though. those are W rated. the stock size is rated V. Either way, can't go wrong. No hydroplaning, great breaking wet or dry, excellent grip.

I used Nokian WR in 205/50/16. They have been very good so far in our CRAPPY weather the last few weeks. This is a great compromise in an all season H rated tire that is geared toward winter traction.

Do you use them year round? I use Nokian NRW in 195/65/14 on some rather cool rims I got used. This is my winter set up. I like the tires though, and I'm almost tempted to get 205/50/16 WR's for my stock wheels and just run them year round.

It is difficult to find Nokian tires in my area, which is a shame because they seem to make great products.

So far I really like them. I haven't run a full summer with them yet, but I've put about 5000 or so km on them, so they are broken in well, and we've had some really nice spring like weather and dry roads, and I am more than happy with the traction and handling. Compared to the original equipment Dunlops (which I rather liked on dry roads myself, unlike a lot of people here it seems, maybe I got a good set because I could basically do whatever I want as long as it was dry), I would say that these tires have about 90-95% of the summer traction. They don't communicate quite as much up the steering wheel as the Dunlops, which I miss from the other tires a bit, but they don't grab the ruts as hard either, so it's easier to drive in a straight line. Plus they ride smoother.

So far, my opinion of them is that if you liked the OEM Dunlops for dry weather, you will also like these, but they are amazing in every other respect as well. My wife keeps yelling at me to slow down in the snow and ice. Since I basically drive at the edge of traction regardless of the tire I use, this simply means to me that I have good winter traction because now I'm going 'too fast' ;)

Kind of like having your cake and eating it too. One of my friends has WRs on his Camaro SS for his winter tire, and he loves them too, and has put about 4 winters on them already. Other buddies with a VW Golf 1.8T and another P5 also got them for year round use, and they really like them as well. If you want to run one tire all year round and you have actual winter, I can't see using anything else at this point, as I haven't found any strikes against them at all.

I say go for it!

Dale.
