Knocking engine after local oil lube & filter leak

My 04 Mazda3 has 32000 miles on it. I decided to have my oil change this morining at the local oil place where I've been going for about 2 years. While driving home in the evening, I noticed my oil light flicker on and off. I turned down the radio and heard some wierd noise coming from the engine. I pulled over and poped the hood. The oil dipstick showed barely no oil in the engine. I look under the car and notice oil leaking. I immediate call the oil lube shop and inform them of what happend. The service manager and tech drive down to where I parked and start inspecting the vehicle. The technician removes the oil filter and notices the gasket is broken. They replace the filter, gasket and add synthetic oil. The car starts and there are no sensor lights but when tech revs engine to about 2k rpm we here knocking. The manager tells me to drive the vehicle home slowly and to bring it in 1st thing in the morning. He calls me later that evening to see if the noise had stop. The noise has not gone away. I am waiting for the manager to call me back after he explains situation to his boss.

(protest) Now I'm pissed. Engine knocks when in park at 2k rpm. Sounds like an old hyndai excel. I am not happy about possible repair or replaced engine if thats what is needed.

What reasonable action/demands should I make?

Lawsuit to have vehicle replace as I won't feel the same in car with repair?

If they do offer to repair or fix, will this void warranty if not performed by dealer?

Dude, that sucks bigtime. They should repair it and I would think it's in your rights to demand it be fixed by the dealer and they get the bill. Sounds like they torqued the cap on to tightly and squeezed the gasket or didn't replace it at all. Keep us up to date and GIVE THEM HELL.

So you got your oil/filter changed at the same place you've been going to for 2 years. They screwed up and basically blew your engine, not all the way but still blew it. Now you want that oil change place to replace your car? Good luck.
Since you didn't go to the dealer for your oil/filter changes, Mazda and their dealership is not responsible for your problem. Hash it out with you oil change place.

RonH: Nobody ever said the Mazda dealership was responsible.

Definitely do NOT let the oil-change place do any repairs on your vehicle. Have the repairs done at the dealership and make them pay for it.

I'll guarantee that you won't get a new car out of it.

You'll probably have to go the route of the lawsuit, though. Hopefully they have insurance or you might be left with your ass hanging in the breeze.

I believe what the other reader had written is the best approach. The service locale that did the oil change is prolly getting hell and someone will prolly lose some butt for it but they know they did you wrong. Take your car to the dealers and have the oil change guys pay for the repairs - most likely a new "used" engine with slightly less miles. The good news is, your car is under warranty so the oil folks and the dealership might negotiate. Stick to your guns and try to get a totally new engine - 5% chance. Sorry to hear the mess up they made. (bicker)
