so the 99 had go because it got impounded and the fee was rawww expensive any way my point is remember how i was complaining about the knock in the 99 and it seized blah blah blah got a new motor it was lovley and boom impounded. Well i fell upon a white 2002 protege that was a 2.0 it was my dream a bigger motor any way, it had 95k on it when i bought it ran wonderful no problems what so ever then one day i checked my oil because my miles where begging to creep up there , i came to find i was only running a quart of oil so i changed it and it began slightly knocking, so i choice to drive it home because a friend of mines home, is where i changed the oil. Then while im on my way home it just all of a sudden at a stop light died i tried to start it it would not crank or any thing, so i pushed it to a parking lot left it there for three days then decided to charge the battery and shizzam it started i was so stoked, that i almost forgot it was slightly knocking(drinks). So after it was running for a while i decided to take it for a spin(NOTE)THIS IS WHERE s*** HITS THE FAN!!!!!(blowup) as soon as i touch the gas after i reverse out of my drive way its starts knocking like a beast from hell was trying to escape from under my valve cover and i don't mean a sound of a beastly turbo i mean like a ******* giant tin man demon-ish (lick)thing was trying to leap out and kill me......in short it still drove and what not normal it just sounds like its about to throw a rod or something i am just wondering if any one out there in this forum can tell me that there is hope for me and my new protege because this is a ****** UP NIGHTMARE FROM THE 99 :(:( some one help pleas

I know that mine makes a terrible knocking sound in the first 30 sec (in winter) or 15 (in summer) if I go over 2500rpm. On wikipedia, it says that its the VTCS that makes that noice but your engine should be fine.

^NO - not knocking like a giant! You are thinking of cold start 'rattle' (think elves tapping)

Stop Driving It.

Get the bottom end rebuilt before it grenades. If that happens the block is shot.... New motor-time.

Becha' check oil more frequently from here on out, eh? Some lessons are more expensive than others.

so im glad to hear there is some saving it and i parked it as soon as i could after i first heard it can any one give me some suggestions on what i will need to rebuild my bottom end

Tear down and inspect.

I would suspect at least main bearings. You really won't know until you see it and start mic'ing stuff.

your description was perfect....i threw a rod 3 weeks ago. curious what ended up happening to yours actually lol

spun bearing man...oil starvation will cause that quick fast and in a hurry, happened to me...#1 rod bearing was spun, dropped the oil pan and was greated to a pile of metal shavings from the bearing. After I tore the engine down discovered it was the bearing for sure, mic'd it out at .50mm smaller than the other 3 rod bearings. In the middle of putting mine together again now.

DON'T DRIVE IT!!! Bearings seized... If you keep driving you can damage the crankshaft and it can be a costlier repair. Still, measure the crankshaft to see if theres any damage BEFORE replacing the bearings, if you don't and the crankshaft is uneven it will knock again in mere weeks
