So, ive been thinking about these options ever since i blew up my first fsde.. what do you guys think?
benefits and drawbacks, feel free to post if you have experience with either
Thanks

Even after forging the FSDE there will be millions of issues that come up. I don't know much about KLZE but has to be better than FSDE. All my opinion after spending around 10k on the FSDE alone. Good luck with whatever you choose.

that what im thinking.. my friends say forged, but the fs is just such a terrible engine to begin with...

The KLZE will be a serious project and cost you much more than forging a FS. You are going to want to rebuild any KL you find, and let's face it, you are going to want to turbo it as well.

So you are looking an many thousands of dollars to do the KL right. Also, running the KL will also be a challenge. I know Pope was using a Megasquirt, but I don't think he ever got his gauges working or A/C for that matter. It obviously can be done, but I am sure it is a hell of a challenge.

Is it worth it? Maybe. I drove an MX-6 for the first ten years of my driving life, and I miss that engine dearly. The vibration and horrible noise that come from the FS make me wish I had that V6 everytime I hit the highway or even just idle.

It's definitely not the smart choice in terms of money or time, but the cooler choice never is.

how do you figure? Forged internals are going to cost ~2k just for rods and pistons, minus bearings, block cleaning, crank refinishing, etc. the engine i would build spun a bearing at 80k, its not clean by any means

you can get a complete rebuild kit with everything you will need for a build for around 2175 shipped. Yes, you will need to get some machine work done. But everyone with this car knows you have to pay to play. There is no way around it, either way you go, klze or fsde, you will be doing a lot of work. I honestly think the fs would be the best option, build the motor and throw it in instead of sourcing a kl, possibly rebuilding that, getting a harness and ECU and maybe a transmission? Everyone underestimates the fs motor when it comes to this subject. Yes, its potential is very low when stock. Build it and the car will be a different animal...in a good way. Of course the transmission becomes an issue after that. Depending on how much power you are looking for, you can rebuild the transmission and have a pretty much solid setup. Then your power levels are up to your tuning abilities, turbo and how far you are willing to go with it. Look at Maxx Mazda, BrianMP5T, Signature Sound, hell even CWill(before leaving the mazda game) and a few others. The FS has potential, it is just based off of how deep your pockets are and how far you want to go with it. I know Im not getting rid of my car any time soon and I'll be doing a full build on it soon. Good luck with whatever decision you make, either way, Im looking forward to the outcome.

so the the absolute low total was $1728
with the couple things that were specific to get my car running WELL, $1926

and u know what, i would do it again any day, not only because of the satisfaction of doing it yourself but because now u have silenced ur check engine light for ever. and u can crank the boost to what ever level u want, (as long as u have a tune)

here is my dyno chart after the rebuild, on 8psi stock turbo, 2.5 fmic, open downpipe

There was a member that won MOTM a while back, maybe a year now that said his engine had been built and balanced and it made a world of difference in NVH.

What exactly can you do to the FS to balance it? I was under the impression 4 cylinders needed a countershaft to balance, which I don't believe our FS has, and it's not something you could add to an engine not designed for one.

That would be my argument against forging a FS is that, no matter how much power you make, it will always be rough and crude compared to a V6.

I'll just tape 2 more cylinders to it and have a forged 6 cylinder fsde.

Wait.....what? Baha. Idk I guess right now I'm leaning toward an FS build, simply because I have the spare block and everything

I believe the KL swap is too much work once you actually get into it. You could have a forged FS and have the car back on the road much faster. I know some people have swapped KLs into proteges over the weekend and stuff like that but how many of those cars had working AC, gauges and ran properly etc.

Throwing in forged parts for an engine/car that they were designed for doesn't take much to realize which one is the easier choice.

my only concern would be the weight difference? Ive been trying to decide was well but ow much more does the kl weigh than the fsde? I ask because I cannot stand understeer and making it heavier in the front is not good. Positives of the kl are good though dont get me wrong its got good performance and sounds good as well. The fs makes a lot of noise and is rough makes my blood temp rise sometimes.

I'm sure the weight would be less than a sexy b**** in the passenger seat. I'm sure understeer isn't on your mind then.

Weight wouldn't be an issue, i'm sure the motors weigh within 150 lbs of each other and the Protege is a light car.
