KL swap underway!

Haha, I'd love to get some pics up on here but I need to get a camera, maybe ill go out to Walmart Tuesday and see what they have for cheap. Its not much to look at now just a few piles of parts and half a bright yellow car haha

Well the trunk is off getting painted by my buddy, the kid decided to primer it for some reason. The front bumper is off too cause I had to remove the unnecessarily large front mount, the rest of the cars body is mostly intact though haha

LOL.......I have the feeling that this will be the Picasso of Proteges ;-)

Last night I tore the transmission apart to attempt to set the spyder gears back in place.... Well I ended up finding a spring laying in the bottom of the case and a broken peice to what looks like something for the shift fork. Sooo I know that my original lsd tranny is a g-series transmission like the kl trans, and I know that I can use the msp differential in the kl case, but can I use my gear clusters as well? If I can just put in my entire msp internals into the bell housing of the kl case that would save me some money... and I could have a lsd :) input anyone?? My kl-31 cams are halfway in as well!!! I'm shooting to have this thing driveable in three weeks. My fiance sold her truck so I need something to drive now, guess that was the motivation I needed to get back on this

Why use the MSP internals? just use the diff. There is not really anything to gain by using the MSP internals versus the KL internals..they both pretty much suck, lol

if you didnt get a chance to look throught he link here is a quote
I like to research. It makes me smert

All g-series are created equal. Here is a quick list of cars the G-series comes in (and that this diff will work with):
87 Mazda 323 GT
90-94 Protege LX
91-94 Mercury Capri XR2
91-96 Escort GT, LX-E & Mercury Tracer
92-94 MX-3 GS (pos 1.8 v6)
93-97 MX-6 (both 4 and 6 cyl)
93-97 626 (both 4 & 6 cyl)
93-97 Probe (both 4 & 6 cyl)
95-98 Protege ES (1.8 dohc)
97-99 Kia Sephia (1.8 dohc)
97-present Ford Escort & ZX2's (i'm not sure of this but ppl tell me they use G-series too)
98-01 626 4 cyl (not sure about 6, i forgot if its a k-series)
01-03 Protege w/FS motor (2.0LX, ES, MP3, Protege5, MSP, and in 02' all DX and LX's got the 2.0 standard)

Basically any car with a 1.8 BP, 2.0 FS, or any K-series V6 has a G-series transmission, even the Miata. Theoretically you could swap the 6-speed Miata tranny guts into a FWD transmission (if it'll fit in the bellhousing).

I mistakenly bought a 4 cylinder 1998 626 transmission thinking it was a V6 model (meaning the bellhousing would bolt right up. Luckily I found out that it is a G-series too and has the same taller gear ratios that I wanted for my KLZE (4.11 final drive) so I figured since I'm taking it apart anyways, might as well get an awexome limited-slip to go with it. I was actually going to get a phantom grip, but then realized how fuggin cheap this diff was (like 150 bux more than a PG!!) and was like "fuggit" and got this instead, a TRUE clutch-type LSD :spin: :spin:

Awsome thank you!! that is very good news. wow, for all them cars that use the g-series and for so long you would think it would have been a better design than it is. I have to use the internals too because the internals from the KL trans are broken, when I split the case open I found a spring floating around and a nice little chunk of metal

This has to be one of the slowest moving projects possible.... But tonight I made some headway!! I got my KL31 cams in and torqued down! I spent the last two days trying to find the correct cam seals and finally found them tonight. I had one head done and torqued and realized I forgot about them about two weeks ago.... Tomorrow I may try to finish porting my millenia manifold so I can at least have the top end of the motor finished. Just got my tax refund!! so there shouldn't be to much of a shortage for funding for a little while.

Got to hear you are still making progress! I have been working on my build for almost two years now...you are not taking that long..trust me. lol

haha your build in the sig looks a little more intense... probaly completely worth the wait though. I used to have two probes, I loved how much people underestimate you with them.

Ehhh..hell I didn't think it would even take this long and I knew what I was getting in to! lol Do you have all the wiring and such taken care of? What ECU are you using? Sorry if those are already answered.

I am actually hoping to finish the wiring up today! I started it a while ago but never finished it... Im using a computer from a 94 pgt. I think I may try to run window switches though to control the vris, not sure how worth my time that would be.

OKay, so I havent been on in a while to update but between everything ive been slowly making progress. today I got the engine and transmission bolted in and most of it is all wired up, ill find out tomorrow if itll start once i get fuel line in the morning. I am curious as to what others have done with all the extra wiring? i have both engine harnesses and both power harnesses ran through the engine bay and it is just way too much. I dont want to cut and hack it all apart until i know what i do and dont need, but has anyone found a good place to stash it cleanly?

i forgot that you were also doing the kl swap. anyway you need some more pics and this is from justins thread
what di you do with the parts of the protege harness you didnt use? cut it tuck it?

Yup, cut and tuck lol I also taped off each cut end and then taped off big bunches to keep them from ever becoming exposed and grounded. I did this a coupel weeks after being done with the swap to make sure I wasnt going to need additional things hooked up on the protege harness.

edit i just reread your thread and i told you back on page 2 that ya need pics. i am a pic *****.
