We're expecting baby #2 any day now. As the father, I have the easy job of getting things ready, while Mama has the hard job of delivering the baby. On my list of things to do is add another car seat. Does any body have any suggestions on how best to seat an 18 month and a newborn?

Now I've got the 18 month in the second row on passenger side facing forward. The plan is to put the newbie will be behind me facing backwards.

[By the way, how awesome is the Mazda 5 for a family car? We can fit everything in there. I put the stroller in back, groceries, bags, blankets, umbrella, first aid kit, etc. Not to mention we can fit the grandparents in the 3rd row. The 5 is comfortable and roomy. I actually prefer to lay back in the backseat, hiding out behind my limo tint windows. The Mazda 5 is so friggin' practical it's ridiculous.]

Hey there,

Yes, the MZ5 is so damn practical (yes)

There have been several threads around this, but here is a recent one:

I'm not advertising brands but for the newborn the Graco SnugRide has been a good choice for us so far.

I'm assuming you are reusing the "old" stroller for the newborn, right?

Please keep us posted on the final decision. Some of us will need to upgrade sooner or later (much more sooner than later I should say (boom05) )

I hope this helps!

I have our 17 month old behind the passenger seat, and 4 month old behind the driver. My 6 year old goes 3rd row, passenger side. If the driver's side seat is too far back, it can impact space for the baby seat.

I have the 1 yr old behind the driver and 4 yr behind the passenger. Both are in Britax car seats.

The 1 yr old was in a Britax Campanion infant seat. That fitted ok, but it was a bit tight in terms of space.

BTW - When you get ready for the double stroller, a Baby Trend Sit-n-Stand will fit in the back of the 5 with the 3rd row folded down.

I would recommend rear facing behind passenger. There is suppose to be 1 inch clearance (safety issue, if there is a collistion, the seat flexes down and then back up. If the front seat touches, then the seat is unable to flex and the shock goes through the child.) between backrest of childseat and front seat. If the driver is relatively tall and infant seat is changed to a bigger rear facing (3 in 1), It is going to be tough to get the 1 inch clearance. It is a good thing that the middle seats are adjustable backwards, however better the passenger is in an uncomfortable position rather than driver.

My wife likes to ride in the second row to be closer to the 2yr old; so if we were to have another I would consider using the third row for the older child.

For us the baby behind the driver worked best. That allowed moma (in the front passenger seat) to attend to our daughter. our 3 yar old is in second row passenger seat.

with 2 kids, the 5 is just right. We have a Peg Perego seat and base for our little one, and their Peg Perego Pliko 3 stroller. The car seat can snap into it and it has a step on the back for the 3 year old to use. He loves it, and it fits in the "trunk" with the 3rd row in the UP position.

Yeah having children facing backward is not the comfyest situation in a compact car :-/. When I had my Jetta it was the worst 3-4 months ever because I had to drive very close to the wheel. But now my twins are 2 and are facing forward. So we're using our 5 as a 4 passenger car with a nice big trunk. If we need more seats, I move the child seats in the 3rd row.

But getting the kids in and out by the sliding doors is a real pleasure. So much painful getting them in/out of the wife's sedan Yaris...

Yup love those sliding doors. my son is 2.5 years now and I don't have to worry about him opening the door into another car or the wall in my garage.
