2003 MazdaSpeed Protege
lol ok i gotta hand it to my mazdaspeed, over a year of fun driving and nothing broke. Then today I stopped at a stop sign, looked both ways started driving and at around 3k rpm in 1st gear I hear a sound that was similar to somebody shifting into a gear without the clutch (nasty grinding sound) I pushed the clutch back in as soon as possible and coasted into a apartment complex. I put the car into first gear and started off, it seemed like it was gonna start moving but then the sound again, so i immediately push in the clutch. After a couple mins i was blocking the enterence of the apartment complex and people were getting in the way, so i tried reverse and it started driving in R for a second or two then i started to hear the sound so i immeditately engaged the clutch, it got me a couple feet of momentum so i cruised the car into a parking spot. its still sitting there. the car idles fine. i tried starting off again and you hear no sounds or anything, but i dont think the motor is turning the tranny, i could push in the clutch shift to 2nd and release and the car would just idle in 2nd so its clear that something broke. but If i try to just put it in gear without the clutch it will make a grind, so it must be getting turned by the motor, maybe just broke the lsd so its not turning the axles. i dont know much about this stuff, but i do have some experience. i did a complete automatic to 5-speed swap in my 91 Escort GT with a 96 1.8lbp (higher compression) and a new clutch, but ive never worked with an lsd before so we will see how this goes. im going to go buy a compressor to use with my new airgun :) so ill check back in a bit, but if anybody has an educated idea of what i might be up against it would be very much appreciated. and i know i can just take off my mods and bring it back to mazda to get fixed, but honestly they dont deserve to pay because i screwed up, so im just gonna take the hit and fix her right myself (thumb)

well i'm glad to see someone taking responsibility for their actions. i commend you for that! unlike these jackasses who rip their lsd to shreds and then complain when it isn't warrantied. keep us updated on what you find. hope you get her up and running again in no time!

Sounds like the LSD. Props for taking the mature route and not making mazda fix it.

Good luck man.

good to see someone taking responsability every now and then

best of luck to ya

it's not a big deal to fix, just time, and money.I took my LSD out of my tranny to get welded in about 20min,not hard.
It just took some effort to get it into the gears I wanted
----how to on LSD removal here-vvv

Did you remove the tranny and the lsd in 20 mins or just the lsd while the tranny was out? Or did you just disassemble the tranny with it attached to the engine?

Thanks.

so you guys dont think i will need to buy a new lsd,or just repair the one I have? i hope so cause the lsd seems to be more expensive than a 2.0l tranny from a normal protege.

you will more than likely have to buy a new one if you broke it in the same spot that most people have.

A stock one from the dealer is like 750 for all the parts.

i hear you can order one from mazda dealers online for like 550 but don't quote me on that. Try mazdastuff.com etc. Also try the protegegarage as well.
Good luck, and nice to hear your attitude and not blaming mazda for the problem

[edit] 625$ from protegegarage

hmm i think im just going to put in a normal protege tranny with no lsd since its like a fraction of the cost from a wreckers, or can i somehow reuse the mazdaspeed tranny without the lsd (dont think so but thought id ask).

That's wierd that it's the LSD, cause it sounds like the exact same thing that happened to my old Neon. I shifter to 2nd going about 20 and it just started grinding. I'd put it in gear and let the clutch out and it would just sit there, no troubles. It ended up being that one of the half shafts actually got disconnected and so it was just spinning freely.

just make sure the tranny comes from a 2002+ protege

one way to find out, open it.

btw,you get rid of your LSD,I promise you,you will miss having it.

well, im gonna get her towed and start getting everything together for the surgery. man i hope my work doesnt fire me for not coming in tommorow, the first time ive got a legitimate excuse lol oh karma anyways, so there is no way to reuse the existing tranny without a lsd? i cant just put a normal slip axle in there? i know i will miss it but im not interested in paying and putting a crappy ms lsd in there and the quife hurts my bank 2 much. i can always put one in later though.

What you want to do is get a good not broken LSD from a mazdaspeed protege and weld the housing together for strength if you can't offord a new stock lsd. After you do that you won't have to worry about the LSD braking. Ofcourse anything could happen and it may brake again, but not likely.

or you could get a open diff out of a 2002+ protege used get it welded for strength then spend $330 on the phantom grip
