"K&N Typhoon CAI" VS "Injen Cold Air Intake" and other Mirical Parts

Hi. I just joined the Mazda team on 7-8-07, by buying a 2003 Protege 5. Needless to say I love that damn car. So I need a game plan on making it my own. And I would love the help of some seasoned enthusiasts. There is already soo much to enjoy about a P5, but what is the "Must" mod or a typical "low" point to the deal, cuz im not seeing one yet. (wow) I had a quick question about the best air filter for any setup, and what is the worst stock part on my P5 I should be aware of? so...

Whats the best air filter for NA or Turbo applications? (I choose K&N and Injen because they seemed the most popular, and K&N makes good stuff)

And if there is a typical build or few parts that just seem to do a whole lot of good out there I would love to hear about them.
Im also looking for fellow Bay Area Californians that might want to go to the track or out for a ride, let me know.

hey! im a p5er in the bay area? can you post pics of your car? Performance mods dont do a whole lot to this car but as far as i know the most effective performance mod would be header

Welcome! I just joined here a couple weeks ago and am from the Bay too. I know the K&N is CARB legal, so that does give it a big advantage over the Injen.

I have the K&N typhoon CAI...you can feel a slight increase in acceleration and it gives of a mean growl an it comes with fool proff installation instructions, as for the Injen, i dont know

Any CAI is going to give you minimal results. If you purchase an INJEN, then I think the newer ones have that sticker on it that makes it legal or whatnot. Both are good but I think the general idea is they're about the same and you can't steer wrong with either. Injen's air filter is basically a K&N filter rebadged so just the piping is different.

I have and Injen CAI. I've never neard the Typhoon but I do know that the Injen sounds awesome. Eventhough the purpose of it is to add hp, it sounds great(eyeballs). I didn't really notice that big of a difference but I do go through my rpms quicker than I used to. I did notice a difference when I added my Racing Beat CBE. And I'm sure I'll notice an ever bigger difference when I get my Intake manifold and Ractive header.(rockon)

Injen is CARB approved.
Cheaper
Sounds great.

K&N cai has the dry filter thing, which seems easier. Or is that Aem with the dryflow or whatever?
Typhoon costs alot.

welcome to the forums!

If you're trying to stay CARB legal, then something to definitely consider is an underdrive crank pulley (UDP). It doesn't affect airflow of the car, so it doesn't change emissions at all. And it frees up a good amount of low-end power.

Welcome to the forums... I would go with the UDP first... and then the Injen CAI, and then a Thunder header, and then... you keep on going until your so broke your eating spam (lol2)

The best advise we can give you is found here

Short shifter. #1 mod to a P5.
I like the B&M.
Struts and springs make a huge difference, along with a big rear swaybar. Nothing makes a car feel faster than not slowing down to turn! :D

Welcome to the Mazdacult!

Great Quote!!!

Why, thank you. I must admit, though: There may be just a bit of rationalizing in that statment. You know, the kind of rationalizing that comes from driving a Miata for 4 years and then having an N/A Protege with MSP suspension on it! ;)

Miatas rock. I got one. It would cost a fortune to make the P5 feel like a stock Miata. It's discerning going back and forth between the two. Motocycle...minivan...motorcycle...minivan. Ha. That's OK, though. That's why we have seasons in Canada.

I've had the K&N bolted up for over 2 years now - no probs. Great instructions / fit and finish / hardware etc. Getting 5 whp out of an n/a FSDE with a bolt-on is a miracle.

I myself am going to get the Typhoon b/c according to the K&N site, it is a CCA system that can be made into a SRI. So for BC weather (were I live) it seems like a good idea to get that. CAI for the summer, then change it to SRI for the rainy season.
