Need some advice please: K&N CAI

Hey guys,

I was researching the diferent CAI manufacturers. i found that K&N builds them for our Mazda's.

Has anyone tried them?

Anyone have opinions?

Why is it that we're always talking about Injen and AEM but not K&N when it comes to intakes. We always suggest them for filters, why not CAI's?

Also, I just tried checking pricing, it goes for $400 USD!!! Isn't that a bit much? It does however replace the WHOLE air intake system, from the looks of it AEM's application doesn't cover the whole system. Am I wrong?

Check it out and tell me what you guys think. We've been waiting for AEM and Injen to have CAI's for our Protege's but K&N has one now!

ummm... injen is the only other major maker that is cold air. that's why there are so many debates about sri vs. cai. it's been shown that with our engines, either intake would only increase gains minimally. the k&n is way overpriced. it's $400 and max gains, as has been tuned and dynoed by both aem and injen as well as by members on this board, yield no more than a few whp. it's not very cost effective to buy something that's $400 that gives the same gains as something that is only $200 or $140. the quality of the aem and injen are top notch. you can't go wrong with either. the filters from both are very good. but if you want to be different, definitely shell out for the k&n. and it looks like the k&n can be converted to a sri as well as a cai, so if you live in a place that freaks you out about hydrolocking, then that's another option. it floods in tucson and i haven't hydrolocked yet. just be smart about going through standing water and you'll be fine. good luck. and welcome to the club.

The K&N Typhoon is basically the same as the Injen. All three, K&N Injen AEM, replace the entire system, but AEM's is a ram air, not cold air so it's shorter.

I have no idea why they're selling it for $400. It does look nice, but not any better than Injen.
If you want a K&N filter just get the Injen and replace the filter with a K&N.

that's the only difference I see. But you could easily do that with the Injen with a few mods if you really wanted to.

Personally I could care less about brand name, I'm really looking for best price/performance ratio. Anyone else I should be considering?

Why not get an "ebay" intake then? They are the cheapest I have seen, but they dont look the best.

I guess you're right it is cheaper and also cheesier. hehe.

I'd rather it look a little better. I mean I'm not going to shows or anything, but still, I'd like it to look slightly better than that.

Just curious, have you seen any better looking genero versions like that?

All they ebay ones look pretty much the same. Whay don't you buy the 3" mandrel bent tubing from JC Whitney and you can make one yourself? I was going to do this, but didn't trust myself. After I spent the ching on the AEM, I figure I coulda done it. :wtf:

well firstly I don't have a JTWhitney here in canada, at least not that i know of.

also, i don't trust myself either, i barely trust myself enough to install it. i mean i can put together a computer from parts, but i haven't fiddled with a car, let alone this one, enough that i could say i was comfortable enough not to mess anything up.

i'd rather limit myself to just having to install one.

As far as installation goes, it's so easy. I did the AEM in about 30 minutes. I put computers together for a living (well not much of that anymore) and have a little mechanical aptitude.

I'm thinking that if you don't have to have a name brand, the ebay ones don't look too bad and the price is pretty good. I think they're going for about $35US now.

If you want pics of my AEM for a homebrew system, let me know.

Also, I've seen instructions on how to make a CAI for a civic somewhere on the net. The most expensive part is the filter.
