Just Got an MP3 and don't know what to do

MP3Night

MS3,Mazda3,MSP
Hey I'm trying to find a boost kit but don't know where to look and where I would start to putting the kit together. I also don't what websites that would be good to go to and buy bolt on parts for my MP3.....Any help?

Welcome to the site! You should be able to find a decent kit on here used as well from time to time. A vendor may be your best bet for a complete kit, and support.

Thanks guys. I also wanted to know how hard it is to replace a Timing Belt and Tensioner? my belt is way over due.

Depends on your mechanical experience level and knowledge in general. My first time working on a car was doing a headgasket, water pump, sent head out to be machined, and radiator replacement all on my own when I had my Eclipse. Read the manual forwards and backwards several times and was patient, and yes it ran well afterwards.

If you are going to boost, it is always best to ask plenty of questions and research forced induction before acquiring the parts. I started reading a couple of years ago, and have recently pieced the kit together and installing next week. You could check out my thread in my link if you are going with the Mazdaspeed Protege Turbo and "accessories."

Yeah I'm good mechanical person but just never had to replace something like that, I just pick up the manual yesterday and have been studying up on it..Thanks for the help with that.

I am thinking of doing the Mazdaspeed Protege Turbo Kit, Yeah I'll do what your saying "ask plenty of questions" because it is a new step for me to do that kind of thing.

How Much did it cost you to put the entire kit together?

Probably costed me about a $1-1500. I bought the turbo, mani, s-pipe, oil feed and coolant line for $500 shipped. Intercooler was 100, universal piping was 140, Injen CAI 60, HKS 60, HKS pipe 20, oil pan 20, oil return fitting 7, reducer couplers and tbolts 70, j pipe 15 i think, spark plugs 12ish, boost and oil pressure gauge 30, oil adapter plate like 30 (w/e it is on protegegarage.com) etc. the list goes on for odd and ends stuff.

it adds up dude...hell now that its summer my stock radiator cant cool the damn thing so thats another 3 bills...if you stay stock it shouldnt be as expensive though

Yeah I'm going to be stock for awhile. I was thinking it would be about or around 2000 to boost it, but I'm about to order a short ram intake to get my self started with the simple aftermarket parts.

If you want power, don't waste a lot of money on bolt-on NA mods. These engines don't respond that well to NA mods and they cost a hell of a lot. $2000 for a turbo kit is doable, but it would take quite a bit of bargain shopping for used parts.

If you don't wanna turbo, I would recommend the following:
Intake (SRI or CAI, doesn't really make a big difference..)
Catback exhaust
Engine mounts
Short shifter & bushings
Good tires

The intake & exhaust will make the car sound a lot better but not very loud (unless you get a catless midpipe and header), and the engine mounts and shifter will drastically improve the overall feel of the car. The MP3 has pretty stiff suspension already so I wouldn't really touch it at all, but good tires are a must. The Protege is a car made for good handling, not speed, so having good tires is a must so you can fully enjoy the car's potential.

Good luck, and have fun :)

heres what you need to do......do NA mods that transfer over to the turbo application....get yourself a FULL j pipe back exhaust... dont buy a premade one...go get yourself one custom done at a shop....SOOO much cheaper...go catless if you can...idk if they test down there... also front MM and side inserts are a must. then start snaggin deals on turbo parts...could go ahead and buy the necessary gauges also

also with the turbo it wont be too loud with straight pipe...

I have straight 2.5 pipe all the way to a corksport canister in the rear. need a resonator though.. little too raspy for me...but not horribly loud

If you plan on going the turbo route, I agree with bronco. Make sure that any NA mod that you get can be used on a turbo application. So no header or expensive intake.. it'll just cost you more in the end.

he already has the mp3 manifold without vtcs...that porting wouldnt be worth changing the mani out....

if your having the famous clunk from the rear of the car i have a clunk fix for sale

I'll go ahead and do that, I would like to get started peacing it together as I go along. I don't know why I didn't think of that!. I couldn't go catless over here I wouldn't pass. Would like like to go catless though.

Where could I find front MM and side inserts?
