2002 Protege 5 AT
Just finalized a deal and bought a used 2002 Protege 5 with 19,500 miles for 9,000 dollars a few hours ago! Was doing some research on Protege 5 performance and found this forum.

I had a few questions for you all P5 Owners!

A) Is this car completely reliable? It is a 2002 model and it doesn't have a warranty no more which makes me somewhat nervous.

B) Does the car seem to be fine at speed of 80-90 MPH? I test drove it at 60, and it seemed noisy, but that doesn't matter as music will be playing. But I was told it is not as stable at 80-90.

C) Are there any performance parts for this car?

My friend told me, if I went to a Mazda dealer, they would give me a catalog, and could install come protegespeed parts on the P5. If not, I don't mind installing aftermarket parts.

Sorry for the bother and thanks ahead for reading and responding :)

it's mazdaspeed and not protegespeed.

i've had zero problems with my 2003.5 protege5. my warranty is expired now (been too long, not because of miles), but I bought mine new in April 2003 and never had to take it in for any warranty service, so I really didn't get to use my warranty!! but that's a good thing.

welcome to the forum.

1. I've had no major issues with my 2003
2. Please don't drive 80-90
3. Check the forums for modding ideas and set some low expectations on performance.

Don't worry, in NY, a bunch of people hit 80+ on the highway

03 according to consumer mag was more reliable but the 02 was still a good buy

the car is noisy ass hell at higher rpm's but if you get an intake and header it will reduce the engine noise. those things keep all that crap from flowing out the engine making sound like it is straining. stable yes though just noisy

yeah like gotta said... dont expect anything grand from bolt ons speedwise. expect great handling though!! :)

I'm going to high jack this for a second...why not drive 80-90+?

And Welcome!!

I know its no super car lol, I am not gonna treat this like my M3. This is just my second car. My wife just got a new job, and is gonna take the M3 (Didn't wanna argue too much, we all know the pains they bring). So yea, its gonna be used mainly to get to my work and back, otherwise I am using the M3. It will be mainly used on the highway, thus the stability question.

Welcome!

I can't say much about reliability, but I'm driving mine for nearly a year by now, and there weren't any problems regarding this.

And yes, the Protege is a quite noisy car, but if that's not your taste, leave exhaust, intake etc. stock.

That's quite a lot... but therefore, many people drive around 100 mph on the Autobahn over here (and some even more).

I don't want to have this devolve into a flame-fest but in short I think speeding that much is unsafe and serves no purpose. The car is loud and uncomfortable and gets dramatically worse gas-milage. Moreover it doesn't get you anywhere that much faster. I go 75 tops on the highway. Say you have a 30 mile commute if you go 90 and I go 75 you get there 4 minutes before me, not worth it in my opinion.

I am going to be honest, I have driven my M3 @ 150 MPH on a highway before my wife yelled to slow down. I am an experienced driver and can drive safely at those speeds. I just gonna keep up with traffic, and people here go 80-90.

Congrats with the purchase.

I would never drive that fast with anyone I love. Absolutely ridiculous.

This is all I'm gonna say on the subject but I race my P5 on a track 3 times a month so I'm also an experienced driver but I would never drive that fast on public roads. There are too many uncontrollable variables outside of a track like road conditions, the other drivers around even if there aren't many, animals, etc.

A) I have the exact same car but mine had 107,xxx...im at 115,xxx now and havent done anything besides replace the clutch, and regular mant like oil change and trans flush...runs perfect still imo

B) 80+mph is about average speed for california driving but i bust 65mph bc gas is crazy here..but ya in terms of stable i read under the performance section, "extended fs-de specs" that around 4.5krpms the engine is already stressing so in that sense i guess you could say it isnt stable...

C) yup really tho only thing worth doing is turbo, if you read about the NA race its ridiculous on how much you have to do and not even scrath 100hp per liter.

That is exactly what a professional race car driver told me once until one day he lost control and hit a tree doing 118 MPH on his corvette. He didn't survive! Yeah speeding is fun especially if your driving an high performance machine but it's not worth your life or someone else's, if you like to speed go to a race track, and do me a favor next time you decide to punch it on the highway, leave the wife at home.
