I cranked through nearly 1800 miles in 2 weeks, so it was time to get the oil changed. I read/printed the how-to, bought all the proper supplies, and did the change. Amazingly, I didn't even spill a drop of oil.

After putting everything back together, though, I noticed that the filter drain plug had a spec of 10 N-m, which I did NOT notice before. I used an Allen wrench, tightened it to a moderate degree, then gave it a solid 1/2 turn extra. Odds are I went above 10 N-m although I'm not clever enough to know how much.

So, the question is, am I safe or should I expect a cracked housing and an oil leak? Please let me know (thumb)

And, just to be sure, is it 22 N-m for the drain plug, 30-35 N-m for the filter housing, and 10 N-m for the filter drain plug?

i run the spin-on filter conversion. you might want to consider it. enjoy the car, but, rest assured. soon you will want more power : )

i may have to try the spin-on as it's more straightforward and i've done probably 20 oil changes on spin-on's with no leaks. this oem cartridge setup seems okay although more complicated.

drain plug update - i took it out for a solid thrashing, and the only oil on the filter housing appears to be from the earlier oil change (a thin film, if anything). if it's leaking, it sure isn't much. and the car runs more smoothly on the valvoline conventional i bought - perhaps the engine will be silent on synthetic..?

and about the power - yes, i certainly know i'll want more :D i'm tempted to avoid modifications for warranty purposes, BUT helping the engine/turbo 'breathe' better via exhaust/intake/etc. might be worth it  i tried playing the 'no mods' game with my last car - first there were no mods, then there was performance software, then a diverter valve, turbo inlet pipe, CAI, FMIC, 3" turboback, etc....

Ditto the spin-on coversion! I did mine last weekend -- not a "walk in the park", but not too difficult, either.

I don't know why they put that silly cartridge lash-up in these things! From what I've read, it's only the U.S. models that use the cartridge.

I was going to get my first oil change at 3,000 miles. Did I miss something in the manual?

A lot of us changed it earlier than that. May not be necessary, but we did it anyway. Mine has just over 5,000 miles on it and the oil has been changed three times: 1K, 3K, and 4,600 (the spin-on conversion). The next one is at 6K. I'll switch to PP at 9K. I'll have to decide then if I want to stretch the interval to 5K or stay with 3K intervals.

If I were to do the 1000 mile change, what oil is recommended? I will read the FAQ on the process, but I seem to recall you don't want to go straight for full synthetic...
