I've got about 3 grand so what do i do?

I got in a wreck about 3 months ago while i was a passenger in another car. i am getting an uninsured motorists check out of the driver of the car i was in since it was a hit and run. ok now heres the question. im probably going to spend around 3 grand on parts. what should i get and why? and about how much im gunna spend
and also give me thoughts on what i am looking at now

true bigger fmic
greddy profec b boost controller
replace the freakin plastic turbo tubing
exhaust
and mayb sum guage pods mounted on the driver side door thingy area
 
fmic (replaces all of the freakin plastic turbo tubing), turbo back exhaust, cai, boost controller and gauges, maximum boost by corky bell
 
From the point of view of an "old guy", whenever you get "found money", be sure to save at least part of it! Spend, say, half on pleasure and bank the rest... I know it sounds boring, but it's sound financial advice.

NOW... if you've done that and THEN have $3000 to spend on the
car...

FIRST: Buy yourself a trip to a reputable driving school: Skip Barber, Bondourant, etc. The MOST important thing in any performance car is between the pedals, wheel, and seat. A well-driven stocker will beat most modified cars...

THEN replace the brakes and tires you'll wear out at any driving school where you use your own car (if applicable), then...

THEN...

- Sparco Milano seats (mmmm)

- iON FMIC ($1000 or so? iON will probably respond to this post)

- Boost controller

- No "real" need for the exhaust, but have a muffler shop fab up a straight pipe axle-back (like the apparently-now-defunct HSM piece) if you want the sound (should be about $100)

- Replace the POS headunit, possibly the sub, though I'm happy with mine

- Spend some money on a roadtrip to enjoy the car!

IMHO, YMMV, etc.

unless you want your motor to make power without tons of extra heat on the turbo/manifold as it's really backed up there and the heat just stays. turbo's make boost due to the differences in back pressure between the manifold and the downpipe. by sticking a cat right after the turbine before the downpipe and even that hideous "S" shape (i guess this is the o2 housing on other cars), you are creating tons of backpressure there. you don't want back pressure on a turbo car. you get rid of that section (and all cats if you want to go all out) you will see much improved spool time, more top end power, even higher boost due to the greater differences in pressure and it naturally making more boost. exhaust mods on a turbo car are way more than the "noise" and if i could get one that sounded exactly like stock but flowed better i would, but that doesn't happen. they can be made to sound deep and very nice with a turbo car though, as the turbo itself acts like a muffler and quiets things down. as to what to buy, it does all depend on your goals.

Is this really true? I've read so much about what is and is not necessary for our exhausts. Some people say go 3 inch from Turbo back and some say it's unnecessary. Most people will agree that freeing up the exhaust is beneficial to some degree. I'm really confused as to what is needed and what would provide the best performance gains. I've also read that FMIC comes more into play in situations with prolonged racing of the engine where heatsoak occurs like AutoXing. I've got my boost controller and that has definitely helped but after that I'm really at a loss...:confused:
 
read my above post. 2.5" is enough for anything this car will produce without new internals, stand alone, etc... but it isn't going to hurt anything to go 3", just be that much louder and increase your boost creaping. fmic does come much more into play with regards to preventing heatsoaking, it also helps by cooling down the air more than the stock one, but it's real strength is resistance to heatsoaking, especially when running elevated boost levels. i know i am looking for a copy right now of Maximum Boost by Corky Bell which i hear explains everything you ever need to know about turbo's, i would suggest other people look into this before playing with their cars and breaking things.

Sell your car and buy an Evolution. Ha! Just kidding! Well maybe not!?! Anyways, I would try to save at least a grand, then maybe see how much of what jred321 said that you could get.
 
If you haven't done it already,

Pay your car off before you mod it..

That's just my own advice. If not, save the $ and then get a faster car later.

Just put a boost gauge, MBC and FPR and be happy :)
 
I was reading turbo magazine and if I am not mistaken they have a project msp, I would wait and see whay they do and go with that
 
MoSqUiTo - our Stage 1 FMIC upgrade is $900US + shipping, our true turbo-back (3" stainless all the way back w/ 3" hi-flow cat) will be ~$1050US + shipping.

The biggest bang for the buck in terms of mods will be the following:

1) Stage 1 FMIC upgrade
2) K&N replacement filter or our CAI upgrade to the FMIC kit
3) Electronic Boost controller (Apex-i AVC-R, Blitz SBC-iD)
4) A true Turbo-back system (that starts @ the turbo, not after the casted "S-pipe"
5) Uprated brakes (either just SS lines, fluid, pads etc, or a full out BBK)
5) Weight reduction (ie: One of our CF or CF/Kevlar hoods, 16" Rota Sub-Zeros etc).

bitsmaker - funny you mention Turbo mag :D their Project MSP will be featuring our Stage 1 FMIC as well as our true turbo-back system (ofcourse they'll have our optional CF rear section upgrade).
 
iON, is your turbo back a true turbo back as you describe it above? That's an awfully tight bend out of the turbo, I'd love to see it done.

I think that you should def. get a FMIC..Manual Boost Controller...
Set of Rims..w/ the stickest tires possible..

Agreed, Maximum Boost is great. I just got my copy from Amazon and it's truly a must read, especially if you have never had a turbo car before (like me).

And Ion is great to deal with thus far. Has answered all my questions and am looking forward to my FMIC, so I'll be all set-up to handle other mods and won't get heatsoak when I start auto crossing.
 
122 Vega - It's a true turbo-back. In fact the down-pipe has a total cross sectional area of more then 3" where it connects to the turbo :)
 
lolol, ion come on.... biggest bang for the buck is a 900 buck fmic upgrade?? how much more hp would u actually get?
