its time to lose some weight

so basically ive gained about 20 lbs since i graduated high school last year.

i started gaining weight badly last year after i crashed my mazda6, and my house almost burned down.
alot of my weight gain didnt come from overeating, but from eating late and night and sleeping, as well as not exercising.
i honestly have fastfood maybe twice a month... so its not really that i eat and only eat junk food. although my diet could be better.

i weighed myself today, and im at 199lbs.

so basically my goal is lose drop 20lbs by summer. i dont want to end up on the slippery slope that is weight gain. its easier to gain weight then it is to lose it... and my car is slow enough, so i dont need any more weight holding it back =P

ive started cutting what i eat, as well as eating more vegetables, and drinking alot more water.

im going to use this thread as a way to document my diet, and see how i do at this. ill try my best to update every day what i ate.

feel free to offer advice or past experiences with diets

so today i had
breakfast-nothing
lunch- traders joe beef enchilada
dinner- 2 pieces of tilapia, and mixed vegetables.
i drank maybe a pint of water... which isnt nearly enough.
current weight:199.2

do a cardio in the am if possible, first thing in the AM on an empty stomach is best for fat burning. tail off your carbs towards the end of the day.

its hard because i have class at 9 in the morning...

but it is something i will do during the summer. on the weekends sometimes i wake up and walk my dog... but thats rare. so itll be good for me and good for him.

im going to try to cutback as much on the carbs as possible. i honestly believe if i change my diet i can drop a few pounds just from that.

the reason i dont want to hit the gym, is because i dont want any muscle gain. i know that some people get discouraged when they try to lose weight, they hit the gym, and even though they are working out hard, they arent losing the weight like they think they should be. and its because they are working out and building muscles that hadnt before... and muscle weighs more than fat does. so i want to focus on my diet first, and see where im at with that, before i factor in working out heavily.

first you need to start eating breakfast. As far as cardio get a heart rate monitor, because at certain heart rates you acually are burning just fat instead of muscle and fat. Watch your calories and modify your portions. The key is to burn more calories than your intake calories. 3500cal=1 pound. Also start doing light weight lifting so you can strenthen and tone your muscles. Light weight and lots of reps followed by some mild cardio and you will drop the weight in no time.

crap i need to lose weight too

i use to go to the gym every other day last summer and last semester but i kind of decided that school and studying was more important

now i eat way too much this semester, i tried running buy i dont have endurance and get crazy side pain

im waiting for my school to finish building this thing
http://www.uhh.hawaii.edu/studentlife/center/index.php

its gonna be crazy, i heard theres gonna be treadmills facing a giant window looking out to the pool

i just hope they finish this summer

ive got some 15lb weights in my closet. i guess i can use those and do alot of reps lol.

i was told that id gain weight in college... and i didnt believe it.
now i believe it lol.

late nights studying+carb loaded food= a very unhealthy diet.

I lost 40 LBS in 3 month just from walking. About 4 or 5 miles a day over a 8 to 10 hour period. (New Job) This shouldn't be to hard to do if you make yourself park further from buildings taking stairs and whatnot.

eat a small breakfast, something that'll stick with you for a while, some oats or oatmeal or something.

It will get your metabolism going in the morning. Also, the water you drink should be as cold as possible. It will make your body work harder to keep up your core temp, and slightly raise your basal metabolic rate.

good luck my friend.. it is possible. I went from 220lbs down to 175lbs.

I do 30 minutes of cycling per night.
I eliminated all fast food.
Quit smoking.
Curbed my alcohol intake. (I have one beer a night, at absolute max.. and I'm even cutting that back)
Ate more whole grains (100% wheat bread, pasta, brown rice, etc)
Amped up my fiber intake.
Ate more fruits + veggies
Substituted chicken and turkey for beef.

And breakfast is uber important, even if it is just a bowl of oatmeal. One bowl of oatmeal per day goes a long way.. Fiber ftw!

Ditto on the breakfast. You need something to stoke that metabolic fire! If you're on the run and don't have time to fix breakfast, there are some good bars out there. My sweety, Rogue, has a sweet tooth, so he has been eating the Fiber One peanut butter bars for breakfast or a snack. Each bar also supplies 33% of your daily fiber.

Like everyone else has said - lots of veggies & fruits, kick any soda habit you have, nix the fast food, drink that water and just move your body (park further from your buildings, take the stairs, go for a walk after dinner, etc.).

A thing I just started doing with a co-worker, is here in the office we take literally only 2 mins, go into a conference room and bust out 30-40 push ups 3 times a day. It has boosted our metabolisms like crazy during the sit on our ass work day in the office. If you can't do that many, start with smaller reps, just use proper form and it will go a long way.

Basically if you have an office job or sit for long periods, just get up, walk around the office or something through out the day. It helps relax you too I find.

Good luck with the weight loss!

Working out is get but diet is were it is at. I lost 26 pounds in 3 months changing the way I eat. I was also working out but I've never had anywhere close to the same results with just working out.

Here are some tips:

1) Eat smaller portions but more often during ghte day (6 times) The reason os to keep your metabolism up and your insulin levels stable. When your insulin levels spike you don;t burn fat...you store it.

2) Always eat Protien with everymeal and if possible first. Don;t carb out. Remember, Fruits and veggies are carbs....good carbs but cards none the less.

3) If you can cut out the caffine - big long reason for this but I don;t feel like typing it.

Here are some links to read up on.

good luck.

Or you can just get diagnosed with A.D.H.D. and get on Adderall like I did I ended up going from 145lbs to 115lbs in 3 months and I still eat like I used to and everything. I actually can't gain weight. It kinda sucks. It happened so fast that I couldn't prepare myself for it so none of my clothes fit me anymore. But I know once I get off of it when I'm older I'm gonna balloon up huge so I'm trying to start now by eating better and drinking only water.

lol yeah I know what you mean... I was on ridalin (sp??) back in the day.. in elementary-junior high school. I remember actually getting yelled at by my mom cause I lost weight instead of gaining it lol... granted I weighed 79 lbs and was like 12-13 years old too, and was like 4'0"... yeah Im pretty short still. After I got off it... back at the beginning of high school... I went from the 79lbs to like 120lbs over like a 3 month cycle. My diet was pretty awful back then too... but I was very active.

I am also trying to lose weight about 30lbs. It is hard to eat healthy. i have lost weight eating healthy then some times at work i get stressed out and eat junk food and gain it back, but i have been trying.

Get a subscribtion to Men's Health, read it, and do what they say...

It's by far the best Diet/Exercise magazine out there....Every issue has what to eat, 15 minute strength training and bunch o' s*** to knock your ass back in shape...Helps keeps my ass in shape and eating right anyway...

BTW...losing 20lbs is nothing.....My buddy just lost 50lbs...He's been busting his ass for 8 months... but it's worth it....

That is crazy i am looking at my mens health mag right now.

Great to see a thread like this, should of started one like this myself a couple of years back.

I will first off start by saying, YOU CAN DO IT! STAY POSITIVE! Remember that this should be a lifestyle change not a "fad diet".

Personally I've lost over 100lbs, it took me a year almost to the day to loose a 100lbs on the mark. This was done a healthy and all natural way. There are some great pointers in this thread:
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER, the more you know the more tools you have, read read and read some more. Men's Health is a good mag.

EAT BREAKFAST, I CAN'T STRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS. It will start up your metabolic rate, you should try to consume 30%-40% of your daily carbohydrates with this caloric intake. Always try to combine protein, fats and carbs into every meal (read up on this and you will understand why) Cardio in the AM on an empty stomach like stated before will spike your metabolic rate and be most beneficial.

DO NOT totally avoid weight training, I made this mistake and paid for it (but do not do this on an empty stomach). The more muscle mass the human body has, the more effective it is at burning calories, especially FAT! At your current weight, do yourself a favor and do not be so concerned with the "scale". It doesn't sound like you are obese, I was 335lbs size 50 pants, couldn't see my dick or my feet etc. So instead of the scale use measurements of your body to watch your body change and also the way your hardening up.

Like stated earlier in the thread, spreading meals out evenly during the day is great for your metabolic rate and will help you achieve your goal. Protein is great because the human body burns the most calories digesting it, so eat lots of it.

I feel like my post is entirely to long, but if I can help one person...let me know if you would like any more information or places to obtain it. Maybe I'll post some before/after pics when I get home.
