Issues for with my MS6 (Engine Noise) - Anyone care to lend their MS6 to my ears?

Hey guys,

P5 owner who upgraded to an 2007 MS6 at the end of 2011 (Dec. 27 or so) that I got from Buyers Volvo. Long story short, I got the car home (Westerville area) and that night discovered a pretty nasty sound once I had it in my garage. Sounded like real bad valve lash, or a bad lifter or at a stretch an idler pulley/AC clutch. Sounds even worse on startup, cold or hot. Called the dealer, and took it back the next day or so to have them look it over (balance of factory warranty). The guys at Buyers Volvo told me something was definitely wrong with the car that wasn't there when I bought it and that it would need serviced. They asked me to drive it Buyers Mazda where the "gurus" could take a look.

Fast forward a few days, cars been at Buyers Mazda for a few days. I call to get an update and they tell me their "best tech" thinks its the turbo, and they need to tear down the engine bay a bit for final diagnostics. I tell the service manager that the sound I heard was definitely coming from the top end/valvetrain, not the turbo (I have a 550+ RWHP 300ZX Twin Turbo that I built (including the heads), so I know a thing or two). He says he'll get a second opinion from another tech, and I thank him.

Few days go past, still no updates so I call again. This time they tell me its VVTi solenoid, and I agree that sounds more like it. Do some research, see there is a TSB on the solenoid for failure resulting in clankety engine sounds. They say give them 3 days, parts will be in and car buttoned up. Sounds good to me. I head in to pick up the car, start it up and the clanking isn't smaking me in the face like it had, but still a little noisey. I drive it to campus, pull in to park and turn off the radio to see what it sounds like - absolutely terrible! Sounds like a diesel engine in the car. Call the dealer back after class, leave a voicemail and let them know that something is still not right.

Take the car over to Buyers Mazda again, and this time the service manager asks me to pull into the bay and point out the sound that is bothering me. Lift up the hood, start the car, walk around front to point out the sound. As we are there talking about it, another tech walks up takes a listen and says "VVTi solenoid? Sounds like VVTi." To which the service manager kinds gives him a look and says, "We just fixed that". He tells me he is going to get all the techs to listen to it and give him their opinions on the sound, asks me to wait in the lobby.

Thirty minutes later he walks in and says something to the effect of 11 guys listened to it, got 4 different ideas on what might be wrong, but the majority think its "just a noisy motor". I disagree, and say I don't see anyway Mazda would put into production a motor that sounds like dog $hit from inside the cabin (to the point where my girlfriend who knows nothing about cars asked me when riding passenger why my car sounded so funny). He tells me that he wants to compare my motors sound to another MS6 whenever one may come in, and asks me to leave the car with him until an MS6 comes in for service. I told him that the suggestion sounded weird to me, but was worth a shot. But I also told him to get a technician to listen to the car under load, high load because the sound became increasingly loud when the motor was loaded.

Its now Thursday, 30+ days since I got the car, driven it maybe 5 times, temp tags are expired, and its still at the dealership. They said the MS6 that came in to compare it sounded identical, and that later this week one was coming in that had the timing chain stretched (another known issue with a TSB made by mazda). He said once they compare the car before and after the timing chain replacement, they will decide if my car is just "noisy".

Now I'm not saying that this to bash on Buyers Mazda's service guys, but I can't say I am sold on their diagnostics either. I was hoping somebody local with an MS6 (stock or near stock ideally) could let me listen to their car and/or take me for a short drive. In the event your motor purrs like a kitten, I may ask that you accompany me to the dealership to service as a baseline for a good motor. In the event it sounds the same, then I will leave it at that and cross my fingers my motor doesn't grenade due to a spun bearing or weak timing chain.

Any takers or input? Thanks all.

I kno fez has an ms6 but he lives by Cleveland. Idk why they ask you to wait in the lobby while they all talk about your car. I stay present until they start ****** with it and force me to leave for "safety reasons"

They've got two of them sitting at the Volvo store. I would suggest for them to go get one of them and make a comparison.

If you're referencing their online inventory, one is mine and the other sold. Not too good at updating their online listings... If you have seen them on the lot, then I will have to take you up on that. I called the salesman at Buyers Volvo and asked if they had any on the lot, but he hasn't returned my voicemail...

Why does it have to be a ms6? Im sure someone with a MS3 from the cbus area could come up there if needed.

Ok... Here is the issue with your MS6...

You have a few issues that are causing it, but the root cause is from something Mazda noted in a TSB. I have it and they said my timing chain is slapping the housing because if it.....

Edit: Timing chains cannot and will not "stretch" It is a physical impossibility since it is a metal timing chain.

Edit2: Also, if the car is running and you hear a sound that is similar to a bearing with sand in it; that is the timing chain and is pretty much normal. I've had that sound since I bought the car brand new with 2 miles on it.

I suggested the same to service manager and he said the motors were too different for comparison. I asked what exactly, and he replied "Camshafts, injectors, and the AWD powertrain". To which I said, "Are you serious? None of those will have a profound effect on the mechanical sound of the motor..." He told me he has years of experience, so I didn't attempt to argue - but that seems like the biggest load of BS I have heard in a while. I am in my next to last quarter in Engineering at OSU though and with 7 classes plus my FSAE project commitments I just haven't had time to research it as hard I would like to.

We use the same Injectors...lol
There are some other people on MSF having issues with byers in cbus as well, trying to get warranty work done.

Called Buyers today, and they said that my motor sounds better than the other cars that came in. Even said how one customer commented on his car running next to mine, that the customer wished their car sounded "as good" as mine. I am picking it up today and taking it to another dealership for a second opinion.

Do you think I should mention that I had it at Buyers and felt their diagnostics needed a second look? Or should I wait and see what the second dealership thinks and then bring up the fact I already had it Buyers?

This^. See if they actually think something sounds wrong.

I know this is a bit late but I might be in cbus this weekend if you still wanna hear one. Mine has intake and exhaust tho so it may not sound the same anyways. I have a few noises but I am fairly certain they are normal.

I'm a tech myself... and happen to have a 2006 MS6 torn apart at work for a clutch and resealing the t-case...

I don't think the parts will be in until later this week, and probably won't be running until Friday, possibly Monday(the Mazda dealer we use for parts isn't usually very good at guessing the ETA in my experience(jerkit)).

It is a customer car so I can't drive it to you, but I will take note of any ticking noises heard when it gets started up again. I drove it about 30 miles before tearing it down, and definitely never noticed any ticking noises inside the cabin though.

Quick question: Is the rubber boot present and sealed where the steering shaft passes through the firewall/floor area? When those things are missing or torn or not fully seated you will hear E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G inside the vehicle. In general having a bit of tapping at idle isn't an issue, rev it up a little and it should go away/be barely noticable... but you sure as heck shouldn't hear it in the car with all windows and doors closed unless you are -really- listening for it.

If you get a chance, I would love to. I go to OSU, but would travel to any cbus suburb for a listen and to meet a fellow MS6 owner. Let me know your thoughts and I'll give you my cell #

Just found out I wont be able to make it up this weekend, I've got a huge project and test on monday. But I go up to OSU often so next time I am headed up I'll give you a shout

Yeah, it was my Birthday weekend and heading into the last week of class so I was out of time too. Let me know though when you head up, PM would probably be best as I am sure this thread will fade into the darkness in the near future

I can take a look at it if needed, Im in Cbus till friday. Going to install a buddies DP on wednesday.

Hey that MS6 finally got buttoned up today at work... I completely forgot but this thing has direct injection... it's going to be noisy as hell and make a tapping noise.

It's noticable when sitting in the car at idle with windows down for sure... with windows up you can hear it a bit... it's not like a midget with a sledgehammer under the hood or anything though.

Direct injection is noisy because of the injectors they use and the pressures they operate at. I honestly have no clue what the Mazdas operate at... but Cadillac direct injection is something silly like 2000 psi.

Unfortunately I would say if you have any valve noise, it would be relatively tough to distinguish between it and the injectors.

Have you taken a stethoscope to the valve covers?

FWIW I took video of the MS6 running at idle, but my phone muffled the noise and it is not nearly as loud as it was in person. There is a distinct tapping noise(like taking a bamboo chopstick and smacking a table repeatedly) which is normal.

If you happen to come to the Dayton area, send me a PM and I'll gladly listen to it and see if we can't figure out if you've got something else going on.

Sorry for being late to the party, but my Speed3 was at Byers Mazda during that time of this post (Jan. 26th -Feb.4th). So, they had excess to an MZR engine. If you want to listen to my the engine, I am OSU campus every day. My personal opinion is the time chain being stretched along with the Injector Valves, they are pressurized near 3000 psi or so.
