Is winter hazardous for CAI?

So I just got home from a run out around with a few of my buddies (in the P5 of course, best car out of my friends hehe) and we pulled into a parking lot and one of my friends saw another friend of his (not mine) and he heard the MEAN A$$ growl from under my hood. As it is winter he proceeded to tell me off and say that I should remove the CAI for winter as it's not good for the car. I didn't say much back just smiled and nodded really. I mean I know a bit about cars and all but for some reason it just stuck in my mind. The purpose of a CAI is to gather the cold air of course but would extreme cold be harmful? We're talking like -20 celsius sometimes here in Newfoundland :(
I'd rather not remove it because I love some of the looks I get tearing down the street.

Hope my idiotic question doesn't cause a loss of respect haha :P

im no genius but i don't think it would be a problem... can't really say since it never gets cold over here

Well, Up here in WI, CAI suck in the winter. (no pun intended). When your driving in deep snow and slush, it gets packed everywhere on the car, including around the CAI filter. So most people I know run a short ram in the winter.

can your p5 swim?? llol

Haha not sure if I really want to try :P

I understand but my CAI is one of the ones that just sits in the engine bay near the coolant tank. It doesn't go down inside that hole by the wheelwell. Does that really make a difference?

It is a Short Ram instead of a Cold Air intake

Cold Air Intakes run down into the fender well

Short Rams stay in the engine bay

Well yes I guess it would technically be considered a SRI because it doesn't go into the bumper. I'd still call it a CAI though because it does sit fairly far away from warm engine components haha just not down that hole.

either way, a CAI/SRI has no effect on the engine in cold temps.

Your motor would still be sucking in cold air with the stock intake

So, don't worry about it and tell your friend that told you it was bad for it to stay away from the yellow snow, cause he's had a wee bit too much

Either way I sound like a moron now hahah
Used to think I knew a thing or two about the P5, my ego hurts bad :(

Hey, no such thing as a dumb question.

The dumb question is the question unasked

Unless it's one i ask, then i'm just a stupid person asking stupid questions

Good Day
My MS3 with a MSCAI has been running fine here in WI, -3 for last 3 days and 48" of snow so far this month, only thing I notice is gas milage going down a little, runs real nice when the roads are clear. Changed the oil and replaced my second Air filter and the one that had been on for 11K and had gone through 30"+ of that snow looked perfect. No slush accumulated, element perfectly dry.

You shouldn't need to replace the aftermarket filters. I know my K&N as well as the Injen filter i had, just clean and oil them with the appropriate kit and you're good to go.

The filter should be good to go the life of the car if you keep it clean
