is this a good price???

First off I want to say, great site. Gives me more incentive to buy this car knowing there are other enthusiasts out there.

Here is the quote that I got from the dealer for an '03 automatic. No moonroof, CD changer, or chrome wheels. I am eligible for the S-Plan so the price is 16, 671. Dealer told me that since I graduated within 2 years I get another $500 rebate. So the price was 16,171. I said I have to think about it and the salesman tells me $15,900. Add to this 6% tax for NJ and roughly $330 for DMV paperwork and the total is about $17,184. Is this a good price or should I try to get it lower? The APR is 4.9 for 60 months. Is the 0% still available?

Thanks.

<font color="#000080">Go to <a href="http://www.consumerreports.org/main/home.jsp" target="_New">
Consumerreports.org</a> and get a report on the pro 5. It will cost you about $10 but it's worth it. You can see what the dealer pays for everything. Use this as your starting point. I got my black 2002.5 for 15411 plus tax and license. Put no down at 2.9% for 60 months.

GOOD LUCK! (thumb) </font>

Kidd, Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to our Club. There are TWO BIG fridge'S in the corner with anything you can think of in them...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have.

make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!!

I don't know if the 0% is still available or not.....you should be able to check Mazda's website and know for sure...as it was advertised there when it was.

I would also do as azeil suggested....its a good weapon to get the price of your car as low as possible.

thanks for your help guys. i'm gonna get one of those reports.

sir nuke, thanks for the warm welcome. i'm sure you'll see me around here more often.

i don't have the 5, just the sedan

but i have the essa...the highest model

it has the following options on it:

moonroof
6-cd indash player
cassette deck
antilock brakes
side airbags
automatic with manual (tiptronic or whatever u wanna call it)

i got mine for invoice with 4.49% apr...which is about 500-1000 less than edmund's "true market value" and about 2-3000 less than msrp or sticker

are u young? i'll tell u how i talked them (and my 03 sentra which i got for 2000 under tmv and below invoice) down

i had them tell me how much it was gonna be per month, etc....then i said i had to call my parents and ask them, etc....basically just work the whole parents over the phone thing for awhile and they'll keep lowering the cost

they started out at 700 more down and $70 more per month for 60 months than what i talked them down to...that's $4900 just for sitting there for an hour and talking him down

with sentra, i talked him down $40 a month and $800 less down...and had them throw in free $1000 options package (rims, spoiler, fog lights, premium stereo, etc) for $4200 less than original offer

i have a feeling i'll be 30 and still using my parents/wife/business partner/roomate/something as a phone excuse to talk them down

oh yeah, and their offer dropped by $20 a month ($1200) when i threatened to "go home and think about it over night"

anyway, make sure u go to edmunds.com and find out the true market value of the car u want with ur options and make sure u don't pay more than that

Nicholasp27, that's a funny story. i don't think the parent thing will work for me since i'm 25 and trying to get the car under the s-plan discount. But thanks anyways. I wish I could find a dealer that doesn't play any games. Just give me a good price and we could either make the deal or i'll walk. Is that too much to ask?

i say, call all the local dealers, tell them what that dealer is quoting you, and ask if they can do any better.

When I bought my mp3 they ran numbers real quick and came up with something I didn't want. So I said I can put this much down, and I wanna pay less than this much a month. I got a call the next day from their guy and said well we ran the numbers as best we could and came up with a payment of $322 a month. I said, well I can only afford less than $305 so I guess its no deal. We hung up. Got a call back about 30 minutes later asking if $302 was alright so make them think that you're price is all you can afford. Start at a reasonable price and stick with it. they'll come around. Atleast for me they did. Anyways that was my cool power trip on buying a car. Oh and welcome to the place. And sir Nuke, I never got a warm welcome from you. Why don't you love me any more? I mean I do everyhting for you, I cook, I clean, I even do that thing you like with my tounge (Man that's a weird word to actually spell)..... Ok maybe thats a bit far but. Don't worry I'm not offended....I'll get by......maybe.....with a little help from the good people at the latrobe brewing company :)

dont worry mp3 man, some of us dont even get welcomed onto the board, but thats ok. and to help you out, even thogh you have been here a while, WELCOME, AND WELCOME TO ALL NEW NEWCOMERS, i guess that includes me. and by the way, this forum kicks some serious a. i really appreciate how everyone is willing to help one anther out. this board is so tight, like family.

oh yeah, and let your mazda dealer know when the contract is done it is done, they tried to screw mine up,tried to make me pay another 700 cash, and my buddy just bought one and he has redone his contract 4, that is four times. he has had the car 2 months and still has temp tags. so lay the smackdown.

It's a reasonable price. I'm assuming that the car has a manual tranny... You should check out carsdirect.com to get an idea. I priced one with wheel locks, bumper guard, and alarm for $15,968. I also live in NJ so the prices shouldn't be too far off... just out of curiousity... which dealer was this?

Assuming you were to buy the car for that price... adding 6% tax and $300 for tags and other bs you're looking at a total of $17,226.08

Now... if you finance the car for 60 months at 4.9% with no money down your monthly payment would be $324.99

However, if you get the 0% for 48 months plan (with no money down) your looking at $358.88

In my opinion, the 0% plan is the better choice. If you have money to put down keep in mind that every 1k will bring the monthly down by $10 (roughly). So you'd be better off keeping your money as a reserve to offset the $34 difference between the plans.

Good luck!

eeveyl, i got that price from chrystal auto mall on rt 22 by greenbrook. the price i got $14,900 was for an automatic. trying to figure out how much insurance is gonna cost. to get a quote takes 3 to 4 weeks. i have to fill out all this paperwork because i haven't had insurance before. is that :bs: or what. what is everyone paying on insurance???

the price seems good

I also visited couple dealers these days in Southern California..
The first one is Irvine Mazda, I saw an ad on website that they have an USED 2002( NOT 2002.5) white manual P5 with 12xxx miles on it. So I went there to take a look..it priced 159xx. With Moonroof, W/O abs...I asked the sales what's the best offer? He asked me what I would like to pay...and said "this car won't last longer than one week..we just sold one at a better price last week"...yeh...I know..":bs: " Then I went to the new car show room and asked if they have any white 2002 manual leftover, the saleswoman said no...then I asked if there's 2003 available? "let me check..." " NO, we don't have it" Then no other words... It seems to me they are not in their mood to do business during Sunday afternoon. So I left for Anaheim Mazda..met a great sales, Mike, very helpful, very nice and not push at all. I got a good price quote from their sales manager for a 2003 white manual w/Moonroof +6-cd package and ABS+sideairbag package ..but they don't have the car and I told them I can't make the final decision that day. Last Cerritos Browning Mazda...met a good sales as well..but price is not good..for the 2002(not 2002.5) white p5 manual msrp 19xxx...the sales told me "maybe 18000, maybe 17500....(selling price)...we don't have too much discount for these cars..because we don't need to get rid of them....blah blah blah..."here comes again :bs:...yes..right... see how many 2002 sat on the lot for how long?

Will probably go to the one at Hungtington beach to see if I can get a better deal..

Best

I pay $130/month for full coverage on two new cars. Then again... I'm 28 and married... so my rate is cheaper than if I were 21 and single.

I pay $158 a month for full coverage, full tourte. I'm 22, with a clean driving record. The cost'll go down a lot when I turn 25 and I'm not considered a young driver. And thanks for the spell check pro1, i couldn't figure that out for the life of me.

Your insurance agent sucks! I can call mine right now, and ask for a quote on any car in the world, and within 5 minutes on the phone he can tell me monthly, every 6 months, or yearly what it will be. I'd get a new insurance agent if I were you.
3-4 weeks? What if you bought the car today? would you not be able to drive it?
Better luck in the future!
As for me, I only have my car insured right now, and I pay $480 every 6 months. That's being 28, err, 29 now and having no tickets or wrecks, ever. That's about $80 a month. I also get great deals here for airbags, and they didn't have a listing for the MP3, so it is listed as a Protege. I have been told that it might be a problem in a wreck, but I discussed it with my agent and he said it will never be an issue as the company has the VIN on file and should be able to tell what it is from that.
Hope that helps.

seems like you guys got a deal in insurance. this car will really be for my GF. she is 24 and we called a few places..allstate, liberty mutual, AAA, and other. the best so far was $1400 for 6 months.

to start a new policy here in NJ they make you go through this whole process which is 3-4 weeks. can anyone recommend a good insurance agent in NJ. i wish we could get a quote in 5 minutes.
