Pretty much as the title asks: Is the RX-8 Competitive in B-stock?

Is there a specific year/spec that's better set for autocross than the others?

Oh, also, do they run in an ST category? Do they get killed? ;)

Thanks.

B-Stock - Yes. Pretty much any year/options. The best would be a base model from any year (called Sport currently) without any options. None of the options actually make the car any better for autox they only add weight. Many people like to get the Xenon headlights so they get the "Performance Package" and add about 20? lbs and have to remember to turn off the DSC before every run. They only option I highly recommend not getting is the sunroof both because of the extra weight high up and the helmet room you loose because of it.

They can run in STU but yes they get killed. There is one guy who has been trying to run one in STU the last few years but he recently gave up and returned it back to stock class.

Basically right now an RX-8 with OTS Koni's and stock sized Lightweight wheels can do very well at national events. But the tires are expensive (245/35/18 Kumho V710)

moxnix - RX-8 Codriver.

Did any of the RX-8's come stock with 17's?

No the automatic comes with 16" wheels and the manual comes with 18" wheels.

Would it be a violation of stock class rules then to run the 16's on a stick? I assume yes, but one could hope?

Ah... Well. I guess that makes running an RX-8 in stock class a pricey proposition, then, in terms of tires. Of course, the reason for running stock class is the first place is not to spend money on other stuff, so I guess dropping a few extra bucks on tires is not that big of a deal.

I admit I will miss the days of Miata 14 inchers! ;)

The reason for this line of questioning, BTW, is that we're very likely coming back to DC when school is done, and I'm planning on picking up a car of my own. I'm leaning hard towards the RX-8 anyway, and once we're back there, (hopefully) with jobs, and you know, income, I'm going to try to run a full season of SCCA autocross. We'll have some babysitting options up there that we don't have down here, so I may be able to pull it off. Due to the lack of anything to do with the kid, and the distance of most of the ATL region autocrosses, I didn't run at all in 2007, and it absolutely crushed my spirit.

So, we'll see. It just crossed my mind yesterday to ask if the 8 was any good in its class. Nice to know that it is. :D

Come to think of it, one problem with the idea of an RX-8 is that I'd want/need 3 sets of wheels for it! I'd have the stockers with summer/performance rubber for spring, summer and fall, a set of race rubber, whether that be actual R-comps, or just some Azenis, and a set of snow tires for winter use. I discovered with my Miata just how necessary it is to have snow tires on a RWD car, even in NoVA!

Autocross considerations aside, do 17's fit? Do all RX-8's have TPMS?

BTW, thanks for the advice/info. guys! :D

you could go a little cheaper (both purchase price and tire price) and go with the Mazda3 in HS. Those things have been doing very well dicing with the minis.

If you want cheap there are quite a few options out there but RWD cheap options are not as many if you are looking for a "Family car" as well. If this does not need to be a family car the MX-5 with MS-R package has been doing pretty well in CS.

Yeah, but if I were going to go Mazda3, I want to go hatch, 'cause I'm no fan of the 3 sedan. If I got a regular 3 hatch, I'd severely regret not getting a Speed3, which is BTW, one of the other main contenders for the job of "Eric's next car." I also want RWD again. I miss it.

Obviously, there will be number of considerations going into my next car purchase: Jobs, mine and Dru's, my commute/fuel economy, house/parking: garage, street, etc., day care: if I'm never dropping off or picking up the kid, I could have a 2-seater for a DD! (MIATA!!)

I admit that autocross competitiveness is pretty low on the list of priorities. I'm not good enough of a driver to be held back much by my car, if you know what I mean!

I'd like RWD, I'd like a convertible, I'd like a Mazda, I'd like 4 seats. I can have 3 out of 4 of those, but not 4 out of 4! :(

I can have RWD, 4-seat, Mazdas.
I can have RWD, convertible, Mazdas.
I can have RWD 4-seat, convertible BMWs, Fords, GM's
I can have 4-seat, convertible Mini's, Toyotas, Audi's.
I can have 4-seat, RWD convertible BMWs, Fords, GM's, etc.

So, anyway, serious contenders are:
RX-8
MS3
MS6
Mini Cooper S
Mini Cooper S 'vert.
BMW 3-series sedan, coupe, wagon or 'vert, in a stick, probably older so I can afford it.
P5
MSP
MP3
Mazda 6 hatch or Wagon, in a stick, of course.
FC RX-7 2+2 (Dru hates this idea!)
Thanks again for the advice, gang.

When it comes down to it, this is what I want, but they won't sell it to me!

Yeah, it seems to be pretty much the RX-8, the 350Z, and a bunch of older BMW M-cars and old Ferarris.

yes 17's fit fine, that's what i have my winter tires installed on.

and yes, ALL RX-8s come installed with TPMS, but you really don't *need* it for 'temporary usage' wheel/tire setups (track/autox, winter time), no i don't consider it an issue to me. at least the tpms warning light doesn't beep (just flashes silently when no sensors are detected), so it's actually quite easy to 'ignore' once you're used to it lol

Thanks, Hank. I wouldn't bother with sensors on the race tires, but I would probably want them for the winters. What are you running for winter tires on your 8? When do you put them on/take them off?

the guy i bought the rim/tire combo from had on Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50's, and it has already more than paid for itself this winter.

I put the tires on at end of november and plan to take them off around mid to end of march.

The value of snow tires on a RWD car, especially one normally equipped with summer performance tires, can not be overstated!

I don't think you were ever at my town house in Springfield, but it was at the bottom of a not very steep hill, with 2 not very big speed bumps. Just for giggles, I tried to climb that hill once in the Miata with the Azenis on and 1/8" of snow or less on the ground. I barely had the traction to cross the flat-ish section of the street and get to the first speed bump, and there was no way I was getting over it!

OTOH, I never had any trouble going, stopping, or turning in the Miata with the Michelin Arctic Alpins on! :D
