Is the Protege worth fixing?

Hi,

I have a 1997 Protege LX that runs fine, but I am wondering when it comes time for a new engine/transmission, can anyone tell me a ballpark figure or give recommendations where in San Diego I could have that done? I have the 1.5 engine now, but was thinking of replacing it with the 1.8. It's an automatic.

Is a used engine from Japan the way to go? do those pass smog?

Thanks!

imo no. I also have an auto 97'. Still havent broke 100k on the odometer. You will get another 30 hp out of the 1.8, which to me, for the grief and hp, is not worth it.

if you're dead set on keeping the old Pro and sticking a new motor in it, your best bet is a turbo 1.8 setup. that said, there is a lot of time and effort not to mention money spent in having this done.

i have a BP sittign in my garag,e and whoa a GTx turbo set up for the same motor.
we just need ecu, harness, i might have a location for a tranny, clutch, axles, well i knwo it has been done, more ponies a few. but the 1.8 can handle a bit more abuse than th e1.5 IIRC, the bp 1.8 do great!
PLus im in orange county, a few people have doen this mod and still autox the 2nd gen pro (95-97 or 98). not a bad car. It all depends if its worth it to you, do you liek the car, do you want ot keep it!
