Is the CDFP upgrade worth it?

Just wondering if it's worth it in my case. I hate spending money on things that aren't really necessary (well, non-appearance things, anyway).

I just have an intake, catless dp, catless mp, boost tubes, inlet tube, and Cobb AP. I might eventually get an upgraded intercooler, but I don't plan on doing much more than that. I am running the Cobb Stage2+SF v1.03...91 octane right now, but I will probably switch to the 93 octane in the summer.

So, yeah...just wondering if this is something that would be worth it, or if it'd be one of those things that wouldn't hurt to do, but won't do much in my situation.

Thanks.

I have the fuel pump and its been a great purchase for me. It helps a lot with making the car run smoother. I have a similar mod list to you and am running the accessport on stage 2+ as well. i would say the pump is not a "waste" of money.. but it depends on the car i guess.. whats your car doing that makes you want to get an upgraded pump?

Have you logged your fuel pressures? If you are maintaining good pressure WOT at high rpms (1700 psi or so), you might not need it yet...

Thank you...I will be sure to log and look. What would be a "danger zone"...like a pressure that if I was running around I would probably want to consider getting the upgraded pump?

if it drops below 1300 at WOT, I would say seriously consider it. Some were dropping down to 600 at WOT lol.

i'm going to be running a special on these kits next week, so interested parties stay tuned.

overall it makes the car drive alot smoother, regardless of what your level of modification is

I'd get them, its better to be safe than sorry. Cobb had alot of issues with people not having an upgrade pump or internals and had to stop them from beta testing until they installed kits. So if you have ave an AP its safe to say that yes you should get internals since the maps were created off cars with internals.

this is news to me. nice to know cobb is taking this into account.

Cdfp= must have. I would rather have it and possibly not need it, but if you need it and dont have it, things can get ugly. Better safe than sorry. Look for the PG special !!

Be careful which internals you use. The KMD ones or whatever that everyone has been using has been deemed defective by the vw community due to premature wear.

That was cleared up by mrlilguy as an issue with the VW cam follower iirc and is not an issue with the Mazdas... actually, just found his quote:

"KMD and autotech aren't the same.

the follower to the camshaft in the volkswagens is what causes excessive wear, not the parts. the contact surface area is the same from pump to pump to pump, regardless of retainer style used. there is a camshaft TSB for the original part #06F.109.101A. a B version replaces it, which is properly hardened which helps with wear to the cam follower.

what it comes down to is an insufficient follower. being that i've had over 5 different brand pump kits/revisions on my car, for over 20k miles, i can honestly say that my cam follower shows absolutely no wear. KMD, I, and JC were going to try and migrate the Mazda follower into the vw's, but the follower is larger in the mazdas - 28 or 29mm, i think? its been awhile. the vw's is 22 or 23."
