gonna to install celica style clear bumper lenses on my p5, have a question: is it legal to put white colour bulbs in?

federal DOT mandates that the front end of the car needs to have a yellow reflector on the side and red reflectors on the side towards the back end... or so i thought...

It's actaully illegal..I called my local police dept..and asked them about it..they said..modifying any lights on the car is illegal..but you won't get a ticket if they are clear (of course that's at the discretion of the officer)

I got a ticket for clear washer led's....

EDIT FROM FIRST POST: washer LEDs are illegal. they are lighting not installed by factory.

bumper lenses are a legal car part, a clear bulb isnt...

nm...

illegal. u need an amber side marker with an amber bulb. no clear side with amber bulb. so basically, anything after market pertaining to lights are illegal. well... something that small, cops shouldnt hastle u - chris

Are you serious.. if so.. why are you proud of it?

yeah u should get a ticket for havin washer leds..hehe jk..i have the clear bumper lense and havent had problem with cops...those are not illegel they bulb has to be amber..but i have hyper white ands still no probelms..so i say just do it

my factory sidemarkers are clear, i changed the orange bulbs to orange led bulbs, so it's clear when off. but then is good and amber when lit.

KY - illegal... cars that are on the side of you (perpendicular) are no longer "able" to see that you are turning.

as far as the clear sides, it is my understanding that the light emitted has to be yellow/amber in color. that gives you the option of colored lenses or colored bulbs (or LEDs). the 02.5 P5 has the amber lenses with clear bulbs for the corners and clear lenses w/amber bulbs for the sides making both perfect examples of two options...

I have a question are those neon undercarriage lights "legal" what about in red neon I heard that if the you can't see the tubes than it is legal but if the tubes are showing and are too low that they obstruct view and distract other drivers it is illegal but I don't know just wondering:confused:

Being in the military and moving all over the place, I have seen that no matter what the DOT says, it really boils down to what local law enforcement does. Basically states have to enfore all Federal laws, but can add to it local regs (ie CARB) but they can not decide not to enforce Federal law. I think it was Sport Compact that had a really great article in either the Sept. or Oct. 03 issue. It basically broke down all the local laws that affect Sport Compacts on a state by state basis. They also interviewed a cop about what he is willing to enforce.

As I remember the side marker deal is this. Must have EITHER a amber light or reflector in front and red reflector or bulb in back. Thus the reason APC got its ass sued over selling Euros with no side reflector and calling them DOT approved. So, if you have an amber bulb in your clear lens, you are legal unless your locality has put a law on the books that says it isn't. Rule of thumb is check with the locals or run the risk.

As for neon, that is still strictly local enforcement if I am not mistaken. I am pretty sure every state requires the bulbs not be visible, but some states say they are illegal to have on while in motion.

Hope that helps.

ky, put your corner lenses back on....heh.... thats dangerous for people around you, and for you as well. if someone is coming towards you, and your trying to make a left turn onto a major street, hows that person coming towards you know your turning? they wont know.....

Make sure we're talking about the same thing. The 2002 P5s does NOT have a side marker (clear), located in the 1/4 panels, that blink (only 2002.5s and up has those).

All P5s has the orange/amber bumper lights located in the bumper and do not blink. Useless POS :D

Too bad I have a 2002, so I don't have a side marker. Like some said, it's actually a safety feature to let people see that you are turning (from the sides). We (2002 owners) should get a petition going or something to get mazda install them for free :)

if someone is coming at you (like I understand from your post batmang) they should still know that KY is turning because of the light that is closest to the grill in the headlight assy...
