Bike + bag (shoulder, backpack, pannier, etc.) is the most affordable way to go, it is possible to get by using this and public transportation. It may not be as nice as having your own car, but it's less costly, more effiecient, good for you and it reduces your carbon footprint (lol @ that). Do without a car for a year, you'll be better off for it.
