Spicy Orange Mazdaspeed Protege #1439
I want to purchase forged internals for my engine, my max horsepower goal is 230-250 in that range. I plan on purchasing a ssfac, and any other components required (manual or electric boost controller) etc. Anyways I already have a FMIC and a full 3" exhaust including a POPE down pipe. I may eventually obtain a gt28rs ("disco potato") as well for faster spool. My question is what all do I need to buy to "forge" an engine, or prepare it for 10-12 psi?

forging means putting forged rods and/or forged pistons ((either can be aluminum or titanium or whatever depending on how much $$ you want to pay)) in place of the stock cast steel ones.

Bonus of this engine is that the stock crank is already forged :D

For other parts.. if your going to tear your engine apart you may as well renew ALL belts/seals/gaskets and even depending on how many miles are on engine, a good cleaning/rework of the head (new piston rings, crank bearings) you can also look into aftermarket cams, faster response cam springs, oversized valves, clutches/flywheels, IManifold, fuel..

youve got a good start with DP, FMIC and 3" ex..

You can put as much or as little in as you want.. some people will say you dont even have to replace the pistons, its the rods that fail.. but to every man his own. I opened my engine ((planning on only doing it once)) so im doing it right and throwing everything i want/can in now, so theres no more tearing the block apart

Another point to look into after increasing horsepower that often gets passed off is the differential/drivetrain. many people on the forum say that the LSD is the first to go.. look into it

okay, so even if I get a different FSDE engine out of another non-turbo protege or 626, do they also have a forged crank?

Honestly you can make that much on a stock block. If you go forged you should be shooting for 16psi or more. I run 10-11 psi and I would be happy if it made 200whp.

A few things for input here as stated 230 whp is fine with a good tune and makes for a very fun street car. The t28rs isn't the disco potato it's what most of the turbo nissans use and its basically a t2560 which is still bigger than the stock turbo. The gt2860rs? is the disco potato and being bigger it will lag a bit more but it makes it better for traction and since it won't be pushed as hard will flow cooler air. Now 10 psi from the stock turbo and 10 psi from a 2860 is a whole different story. As in 18 psi on my little vj11 will have nothing on the t28 I'm going with on 10 psi because it will be flowing more air and cooler air

And there are still a lot of other variables
