intakes again

Hey. I'm new to intakes and I've been digging as much as I can on intakes so far, but still had a few questions.

Looking at the pictures, I've gathered that HKS is not a cold air system, but more of a short ram that has a fancy filter to try and regulate better flow. Is that correct? Also, I understand that cold air = denser air = better combustion, but what's the theory behind short ram? Better flow = denser flow = better combustion?

Also, how often should I expect to clean/replace the filter?

i'm guessing here but i think the theory behind a sri is get more air to the engine since you'll be running an open air filter. a lot of times, a sri will also try to place the filter away from the engine, usually around the headlight area in an effort to pick up slightly cooler air. most turbo cars run a sri but they have an intercooler so it doesn't matter as much.
i'm not sure if hks sells cai's or not. all i've seen are sri's. the hks flows well, though the apexi filter is supposed to be the best flowing filter currently. according to the k&n website, expect to clean/replace the filter every 50,000 miles.

funny thing is is that the injen filter uses a k&n element.

I bought a "cold air intake" off ebay and it was just an intake and two curved pipes.. I went to autozone and bought some more pipes and now my intake sticks out from the bottom of the car facing forward. I had a short ram intake before and I can definitly notice an improvement since I changed it. It sticks out about 4 inches from below the car and everyone makes fun of me and says I'm going to suck up something in the engine.. The other night I drove 2 hours through a rainstorm and my car still works.. so.. I recommend something like that w00t w00t
