Thanx...

that makes no sense that you would have to replace your intake valves before you exhaust valves.

^really.

what happened? i burned an exhaust valve at 197k miles, and the intakes looked normal..

strange, well problem solved by replacing them..it was very difficult to start the engine when cold, now it is just fine, but tellya it was not cheap..this was done in a Mazda workshop!

because if you pull apart a well used head, you will see that the exhaust valves take a hell of a bigger beating then the intake valves.

only time I have seen intake valves damaged to the point of replacement more then exhaust is on interference engines that break or slip the timming belt.

Is it common for miatas to have starting problems? I've only had my MX-5 for three days, and today it started acting funny about starting. Like it just wont kick over, but if I turn the key all the way back and try again it starts fine. Mine is an '02 w/ just over 60k btw.

I've never had any problems starting either of my Miatas and I have not ever heard of a common occurance of hard starting.

After doing some research, it turns out I'm just an idiot and have been pressing the gas at startup, which is a no no. I stopped doing it, and I have no more trouble starting the car.

so you mean that my engine slipped the timming belt, how did that happend? (poke) :)
Thanks!
Miadas are non interferance motors. meaning that if the timing belt slips some teeth, the piston will not hit the valves. All that would be needed to get back on the road is a timing belt job..

I'm still not sure why you'd have to replace your valves unless: perhaps someone was running leaded gas? leaded gas is really bad for valves, and the valve seats.. I ctually had to add a lead additive to my gas in my older cars (from the 60's) to compensate for the leaded gas now.
