Intake Mods-Are they worthwhile?

I've seen several posts regarding the CAI and the Cobb SRI. What are the actual, true power gains with these mods? The Cobb website shows a dyno run at high altitude with a gain of 11 HP and 16 ft-lbs torque.

That seems like a small gain. What do all of you say--is the intake mod worthwhile?

Keep in mind that the Cobb SRI was also tested on a Mustang Dyno (reads much lower than other dynos) and that the readings are at the wheels not @ the crank.

Intake mod is most defiantly worth every penny.

My 1/4 time went from a 14.3@97 to a 13.9@99.92 after putting on the Cobb SRI.

Intake Mods-Are They Worthwhile?

MS0377:

Does your engine sound noticeably different or louder? I'm 51 years old & don't want a "need-for speed" special.

intakes typically do not gain much power, but a few. after you have the turboback exhaust and get something like an accessport etc, if you get dyno tuned then you will benefit from having an intake even more so then just a few hp :)

11 horsepower is roughly a 5% gain in HP, which is not bad for an easy, cost effective bolt on in my opinion.

The intake will make the car a little louder, but nothing like messing with your exhaust will. A CBE is good for little more than changing the exhaust note, but for a lot less money, a new intake will gain you power and fuel efficiency.

The type of dyno is of no relevance when talking about changes in power levels. When comparing absolute power output, yes, but not changes.

Intake will give you enough power to take off about .1 - .3tenths of your 1/4 time.

The car isnt all that much louder. You do hear a very noticable whooshing noise when you are @ WOT.

As for the intake - not only does it add power but I get 2 L/100km better mileage.

With a MM the intake takes a fulll 1/2 second off 1/4 mile times.

I think the following is a decent example from a 1/4 standpoint:

Stock avg: 14.1 - 14.4 (on rear occasions 13.9 has been accomplished)
+ Intake: 13.7 - 14.0 (One member actually ran a 13.6 with just intake)

It was worth it to me! I love my Cobb, but showing off with my brother (his first time riding with me) I had too much wheel hop, more than I had stock, I'm guessing due to the extra torque/hp. But installing some corksport inserts fixed that.

If you're looking for a subtle sounding intake, I don't think the Cobb is for you. Might want to try out a CAI instead.

The only power mod I have is the Cobb SRI and after a few days of the ECU learning it feels MUCH quicker. Great bang for the buck mod...

Love my MS CAI, Had the dealership install it so it is covered under warrenty. So I don't have to worry about taking it off if I ever have to take my car in for anything. Love the noise too, great product

So Mazda allows the MS CAI again? Where can you get one?

Um no. The MS CAI is covered under the Green Warranty so you should be good to go.

I have the MS CAI and it's awesome! I love the deep growling of it and I'm happy with the choice I made.

You're kidding right? You know the MS CAI was recalled for causing a Lean issue right? Might want to look into that
