somehow i don't think this is right

http://www.shaneracing.com/protege.htm

it says the mazdaspeed exaust and intake cam with increased lift will add 10 and 12 HP respectively, then you add the mazda speed exaust for 9 HP and maybe an inJen CAI for around 5HP

so intotal you will have 166hp? sounds a little high...

what do you people think?

Its not correct. On the Protege Club board Traveler has dyno'ed his car with both cams in. He didn't see that big of a gain.

agreed, one of our members installed both cams and said he only felt a small improvement over stock cams. he has yet to dyno it, but has a g-tech (although not accurate) and proved he runs a faster than stock. i believe with other parts (higher compression pistons, valves, fuel computer, etc) the car will make bette use of the cams.

haha i knew it was too good to be true, i guess its an all or noting situation

either buy everything and get and okay boost or buy 1 or 2 parts and still have no power

if you get the profiles for those two cams....the lifts and durations are bearly more than the stock cams are....not worth it in my book...

My butt dyno says about 5 WHP maybe. With cam gears and tuning you might could get 10-15 WHP outa them.

I know that when I did mine, I could feel an improvement but not a ton. I went from around 97 at the wheels to 101 with the intake cam, then 104 with the exhaust. With a better air intake on it jumped to slightly over 107, then 110 with a better exhaust. Now with my shorty equal length header it makes 113.4 at the peak, but makes 3-5 all through the RPM range and doesn't sign off at 5700 like it did with the manifold. I think that the cams need room to breath. Also, my torque jumped a bunch with the header from 111.2 at 4250 to 119 at 4250. Instead of dropping off at 5700 it also maintains the torque past that point. Without the header I had a max of 88 at 6250. Now I have nearly 96 at the same point.

If I can just get some better ignition and fuel control I'm sure I can get over 120 to the wheels without any further hard parts. This thing has way too slow of an advance curve and way too much fuel at WOT.

As far as the cams being worth it, well, I'm not sure. The intake cam has almost exactly the same lift as the stocker with about 10 degrees more duration. The exhaust adds .020 lift and about the same 10 degrees. Basically, they match now with the same lift and approx. the same duration. It adds power, but we really need some ECU work to get it all out. They are still very mild and don't affect the idle. I'm sure they would still work great with a turbo or supercharger due to the conservative specs.

well they are perfectly right with their 12 hp and 10 or 9 hp with the cams b/c it says "up to" ... that dosent mean you will get 22 hp from them.... well the gains arent that great b.c there is no lift change .. there is just a degree change....
