So anyone ever do it?

i dont have the stock rear sub box and i would like to add a lil pump to my audio, nothing crazy.

Do they make 6x9s that are more aimed towards bass? and is there wiring in the car for rear speakers or would i be tapping into speakers that are in the rear doors. Im not all that good with audio stuff so any input would be great.

Im not looking to spend the money on getting a real system and i like have the trunk space.

lol @ "speakers in the rear dick lid"

I've been considering this myself as well, since I ditched my sub box awhile back. By far the easiest thing to do would be to get a small 2-channel amp, plug that into the RCA cables that used to go to the sub's amp, and drive the speakers with that. Heck, the power, ground, and remote turn-on wires are all right there too, so the install would be a breeze even if you're no good with electronics or audio.

Tapping into the rear door speakers would be possible, but you'd be better off with even a cheap amp than trying to drive a second set of speakers off the head unit, especially if you're looking for a lil extra bass.

lulz that was a fail haha

i used to have a system in the back and after i took it out for an AutoX event, when i went to put it back in it was all messed up and nothing would work, and the previous owner ran his own wires and hacked all kind of stuff up. so its a disaster in the back.

but thanks for the info that might be actually a really good route and way easier then what i was thinking of.

Ah, gotcha. Well, the good news is that it's really not that hard to wire in a small amp. If the previous owner hacked it together, you'd be best off just starting from scratch. Those amp install kits run about $30 or so, and include everything you need.

so i took a peak at the rear deck today, the plastic covers that mazda used has a connector plugged into the plastic cover.

So this might be super easy, going to try it out this weekend with some GTO speakers, get them free from work.

I am actually going out to look at some speakers for mine as well I was planning on using the stock amp to power the deck lid speakers. So they are 6x9's? I also took out my subs for an auto-x and I just decided to leave them out for now and want a lil more bass from my system.

Don't forget that the stock HU is already powering a set of speakers in the doors. You can certainly run another set off the HU, but I seriously doubt the ability of the HU to drive power two sets of speakers very well.

Went and found some infinity's I like but will wait a lil before I actually purchase. Don't feel like spending the money yet lol.

I took out the stock MSP subwoofer and replaced it with a MDF plate where cut out a hole for the 6x9 magnets. The advantage when doing this is that you gaina nice place to mount amps, processors, cd-changers or whatever. I used the stock amp on the stock placement for the 6x9 at first, no problem there.

Just throwing in my 2 cents... most 6x9 speakers are good for mid-bass but can't compare to a subwoofer. The frequency range of the 6x9 simply can't go as low.

Also, a cheap subwoofer/amp combo in the trunk and speakers in the front doors is really all you need.
Rear doors and deck lid speakers only work as "fill" to increase the volume heard by the rear passengers.
If a system is properly set up, you should hear a majority of the sound coming from the front, rather than the "surround effect" - think about when you go to a live performance or a concert; sound comes from the front where the stage is, not all around you.

so i got the GTO speakers and just hooked them for testing

the plugs in the back work fine so for now im just going to hook them up, until i pick up some better speakers and small amp.

all i need to do is screw in and plug and good to go, i dont have to mess with an amp, rca's or wiring them from the back door speakers. Mazda was nice enough to leave us the wiring

I've got Alpine type-s 6x9s in the rear deck. I've also got a 4 channel kenwood amp I bought used that powers the two front speakers, and the two rear deck speakers. Same (stock) head unit controlling it all. Works pretty nice except there's no fader ability with the stock pre outs.

The stock CD player in the MSP has 3 pre outs (front, rear and non-fading) Just run an extra cable from the unit and you have fading options.
