Installing hitch wiring. Question on killing the power

I installed my hitch. Next is wiring. The instructions say to disconnect negative battery. Can I throw on a battery tender to keep the electronics happy, or will disconnecting the battery do nothing?

Disconnecting the battery will only reset the shift learn, reset some of the settings like button beep, dash light brightness etc. It's not really going to mess with anything. You won't lose bt/nav settings etc.
