Installing Amp- All I have to say is...

Wow... I didn't expect this many people to respond. Unlike most of you I went through the electrical wire grommet that is under the glove compartment. I got that idea off of here somewhere. I never saw one about going under the steering wheel or much less on the driver side of the car at all. Good luck how ever you may go about wiring your amp.

this isn't really relevent at all but i just ran O gauge in an 03 tahoe the other day. and we replaced EVERYTHING! battery cables. motor ground cables. amp power cables....every single wire that made sense to replace with respect to power issuses related to amplification of a stereo got replaced. took a while and was a huge pain in the ass with some of the engine ground wires, but no more amp cutting out and no more lights dimming. We are running 2 JL 13w6v2's on a JL 1000.1. As well as a JL 300.4 pushing 2 sets of pioneer components. we are also using a 2nd battery. we had O guage run to the second battery and the amp already. but the 300.4 started cutting out and then the 1000.1 would cut out shortly there after. ran more O gauge and all is well again. Beefing up the stock alternator from 145amps to 240amps next tuesday....anyways, i'm done thread jacking...and rambling for that matter

how much is that altenator going to run?

we are getting it rewound for like $120 and since its gonna be open we are going to rebuild it for another $100. I could easily be wrong tho. I'll check and get back with you. It's a local place here in Columbia that is doing the work.

i don't know much at all about alternators but i know that is money put in the right place if you are getting it done for that.

it's actually $110 for the rewinding and $100 for the rebuild. more power is definately a good thing. after tweaking we are still getting dimming lights. Just didn't notice before cuz it was daytime. This alternator upgrade will fix that totally and should be good for whatever we can dream up next. tahoe is sittin 3" lower on 24's. got escalade rear glass, and rear vents as well as door handles. Got roof rails and side steps on the way. heres a pic of her sittin on the beach in orlando.

No, the amp temperature cant be effected by the size of the power wire. I've seen the wire melt before if too small a wire is used though. easy way to figure out what size you need is like so,

100-300 watts = 8 gauge
301-700 watts = 4 gauge
701-1000 = 2 gauge
anything above that go with 1/0

And I'm not talkin about those bad Sony amps that are labeled at 1200 but only make 500 RMS. These are RMS wattages I'm talking about, not peak.

exactly. i was running 3 amps one on a 4 guage and you could fry an egg on them....so you learn from mistakes.
