Installing Ambient Lighting

Ok so I have been thinking about this for a while, but I don't know much about wiring or anything like that. I love how in cars like acura, bmw, and audis have this ambient lighting that comes from the dome lights or the rearview mirror and casts a glow on the car's interior when the headlights are on. I want to instal something similar on my Mazda 3.

Anybody know, how the wiring might work for this or has anybody done anything similar? I have blue led's for my map and rear dome lights, but they are too bright. I was just thinking of getting a somewhat weak, small blue led to stick in the overhead dome lights, but I want to wire them to the lights, and I don't know how to go about it.

Thanks

The attachment on the left is the mazda3 dome light area I was talking about

The attachment on the right is one off an acura tsx that has a single led for ambient lighting

How about installing a brighter bulb in the light above the ashtray? I noticed I had a little bit of blue ambient light the other night while driving in the pouring rain.

The only thing about that is that it only really illuminates the asktray and the shift knob. I kinda wanted an light ambient glow in the cabin.
