WHAT ARE CARS
It has an anti-theft dealy on the headunit, are there any special tools I will need other than a harness when installing a new headunit?

No need to be rude. I have installed head units in many cars before...but not a VW. But since your question is specific to your model and year VW the chances of someone knowing the answer here are very slim. Post on a car audio website or a VW website and you will have better luck.

He's right though, some of us are, or in my case, used to be professional installers.

In answer to your question you will also need an antenna adapter as the antenna connection on most german cars is different than that of others. You'll also need to use the Ford radio removal keys that you use on a Mazda radio to get the VW radio out. Aside from that it's a piece of cake.

I used to have a 96' GTI. When i put my cd player in it I needed to use a special tool to remove the stock player. Its the same tool that is used to remove older ford radios. Its less than five bucks at autozone. Hope that helps. As far as the wire harness goes, theres nothing special. When you reinstall the radio you will have to enter the code. Let me know if you have more questions.
