You guys think you got bad laws down in the states ?? Up here in Vancouver, Richmond. They tow your car if you have eyelids !! well, thats what happened to my friend.

"Whats this? a type R sticker? INSPECTION!" i heard about richmond cops.. Think everyone that doesnt have a bone stock car is a street racer.

No matter were you go there are dick and there are the guys that you like. I got pulled over for speeding and the cop didn't even have a radar in his car. He knew he couldn't give a ticket with no proof, he was just being a dick to a highschool kid.

Then I got pulled over for doing around 80 at night in a 55 (before the infamus "Safe and Prudent" speed limit". I gave him my licence and s*** and he looked at it, looked at me, and said to say hi to my grandma. I never knew him, but I guess he went to a school that was like 100 miles away were my grandma was the nurse.

Dumb luck, I guess

Just an FYI, you don't have to have a radar to or laser to prove someone was speeding. Most cop cars speedo's are certified from the factory, and a number of departments still "clock" you in a given distance...

not when he is at a right angle to me. Hard to clock me when he's stopped.

That is how they "clock" people. At a right angle to your direction of travel. "Clocking" is the process where they have two objects that are a known distance apart. The cop then times how long it takes for you to travel between the two points. Anything under a certain time, voila, you are speeding.

They can work out the math to determine exactly how fast you were going while they write the ticket...

What laws , where and what is this?

ZG....in NEARLY any state...if you challange the ticket and go to court....and if the officer that gave you the ticket does NOT show up to testify....there are no witnesses for the procecution, thus NO PROOF....and the ticket is thrown out.....simple as that. Tom got a break..... :{D way to go Tom!!!

Just ask the people in states that use AIRPLANES do CLOCK YOU....ever seen a sign on a highway that states something like "aircraft used for traffic control" or something like that? ever notice BIG white stripes across a highway? .... yep....the plane just flys along the highway...you never see them....they are CLOCKING you in the manner stutters mentioned above...between those big white lines.....then they radio the guy sleepin or eating donuts on the side of the road...and THEY pop you......you never see it coming.

another thing...here in texas there is a CODE that is put on speeding tickets....its HOW you were caught....or the speed recorded...

R= RADAR...and can be faught....
C= Clocked...and some judges see inaccuracies in this depending on the specific way in which you were CLOCKED..

then their is P which = PACED.....you are dead....caught DEAD TO RIGHTS.....as in the troopers or police get behind you without your knowledge...and actually match your speed.....POP...your dead....no need to even attempt to fight this one. You generally will not see this happen unless there are two troopers in the car....TWO witnesses....

so your telling me that if he see you between two building, (ie house 1 and school, and he says 1 onethousand 2 onethousand 3 onethousand, then he can get an accurate measurement of my speed. I realy don't see that holding up in court, do you.

Basically he has to be able to time me to within a 1/2 second, given a large 60ft right of way and setback (ie edge of building to edge of building). There is a one second time differenc in the amount of time he would see me, and then he would have to document what speed I was going. He cant just give me a ticket and say that I was going faster than the speed limit. What would they fine me.

He could have tried to give me a reckless driving ticket, which doesn't have to deal with speed at all.

Basicaly, the point is, he was pulling over highschool kids and giving them a hard time because he could.

Hey just saw that you won. CONGRATS TOM!. Now for the aerial cops. South Carolina has those too. There is also something called VASCAR. Little known about it because all it is is a box with switchs on it. You pass a paticular point (like a strip on the road) and the cop flips a switch. then you pass the second point and he flips another switch. And then Bam this little box spits out a conversion that tells the cop how fast you were going. There is no way around this and detectors don't do a damn thing for you in this case and as far as standing up in court, Cop or not as long as the printout from the machine is there consider that your witness and you are busted. They mainly use this in states like DC and virginias. I have heard of a few cops around here with them but most of the cops in charlotte are now using instant on. Oh yeah there are always going to be good cops and bad cops. I got pulled for doing 110 in a 70. I was in my truck and on the highway. Guy in front of me was pissing me off speeding up and slowing down so I decided to pass him. I get up next to him and the dumb ass old man floors his cadi. Well I go WOT as well and smoke him. Look down to see 110 and let off just as I go under an overpass and you guessed it a cop was there, anyway when he pulled me he didn't give me a ticket he just wanted to know what kind of truck could pull like that on the highway. He said he was clocking me and watched my speed jump from like 72 - 85 - 93- 102- 110. Yes he clocked me several times because he saw that I was still accelerating. Anyway cool guy told me he was going to start looking for a truck like mine and told me to slow it down. On the converse side I got pulled in a group of 10 other cars when I was in my corrado and the cop went off on how I was racing and all this other mess, But like NUKE said above most of the time if the cop doesn't show then it gets tossed. That particular time I happened to have a witness of my own in the car so they went to court with me(girlfriends are actually good for something j/k) Still major pain in the rear.

Point is if you aren't willing to pay the consequences then don't speed or drive for that matter. But then there is always going to be somebody that gets nabbed and can't get out of it and you just have to face it. Oh well just my .02 I'll shut up now.

they don't just park and arbatrarialy pick out two objects.....at some time they have gone out and taken MEASUREMENTS between buildings....or put marks on the road or whatever....and then NO...they dont' just sit there and count to themselves....they will use STOP WATCHES....

I don't know about the state you are in...but in Texas...the fine is the same for the first 10 MPH over....so if they bust you for ANTHING over the limit...they got you for at LEAST that fine....but to calculate the exact or close enough speed you were going is a simple matter of dividing the distance by the time and convert it to MPH.

Tom. you are an outlaw.rebel i tell you. congrats for gettin over on the piggly wigglies.

Congrates

But i will still ke to see were a cop has the right to ask you too look under your hood?
And were he has the right to tell something without proof.
I will talk to my Cuz who is a cop and relate this story to him . Just makes no sence at all.

Just remember....not all state or even LOCAL laws are the same...and what goes here....does not mean its legal OR Illegal in YOUR state/province/city/town/parish or whatever....

...(snip) I realy don't see that holding up in court, do you. (snip)...

Yes it will hold up in court because in order for an officer to even think about "clocking" someone they go through a couple hours (at least) of training on how, why, what, where, etc. just to be able to do it.

That officer is then certified to be able to do so. The state/county/city/whatever that the officer works in recognizes that certification and allows that as evidence to show that the officer is able to "clock" someone.

Just as an example of some of the training an officer goes through for stuff like this regarding speeding, in order to be certified to be able to "radar" someone in Colorado, you have to succesfully judge a vehicles speed 20 times consecutively within 5 mph of the actual speed.

So, an officer knows you are speeding before he even uses the radar, all the radar does is "confirm" his original suspicion that you are indeed speeding.

Now, for your particular case, yes, he could have pulled you over just to be a jerk, or could have legitamately estimated and "clocked" your speed.

A. I was speeding
B. He could have judged my speed.
C. He is not the judge and under the situation, he had no real proof.
D. He didn't even take my license. He sent me on my way with a warning.

That has been the only time I have ever been pulled over and didn't have my licence and registration etc. taken. I don't know if that is policy or not, but I was odd, especialy considering the cop (pig) in question had a reputation in town for hardass teens.
