I've read a lot on here about flywheels, and trying to do my research to see if it's worth getting one for a DD. And while searching the interweb for some i've noticed they arn't to easy to find for the MSP. So does anyone have any good sites for them besides CS and PG. AND if you have one on your car can you chime in on how they are for daily drivers. i use my MSP a lot to go to work and i drive about 40miles one way. SO it gets driven alot and i just wanna be sure the lightweights can handle it. Thanks in advance.

I don't recommmend a 7lb flywheel for daily driven cars. The Mazdaspeed 14lb flywheel is a good balance giving you the benefit of a much lighter flywheel without losing too much inertia and rotating mass.

So your suggesting staying with the original one? I was thinking about doing that anyways. I was just going to get it resurfaced and slap it back in.

the stock flywheel is good for daily driving, but there is one produced by mazdaspeed that's quite a bit lighter.

The lighter the fly wheel the less stable the engine is. It makes driving in traffic difficult and tiring. I have an fx400 clutch masters super easy to drive because I kept the stock flywheel, I just made sure it was machined to clutch masters specs.

do you have those specs or a run down on the needed machining?

I'm sure I have the paper some where. It's a little booklet that comes with the kit with all the info and warranty info. I just gave it to the machinist when I took the flywheel in. They just wanna make sure the step down is at a specific height.

Take this for what it is worth. I've used an 8lb. flywheel on a non-Mazda car that, while it wasn't a daily driver, it was still easy to drive in all situations--a lot easier than I thought it would be. I expected to have to rev the hell out of it to get it moving without killing it. Not so. It was pretty docile.

Full disclosire: it was a sub-2000 pound car, so that had a lot to do with its behavior, but the engine was only a 1.5L. Your mileage may vary.

i ordered the mazdaspeed flywheel. It's just a tad lighter than stock. we will see if there is any difference.

Less stable? Incorrect. Fly wheel wont impact engine stability, if you were to machine the crank then yeah sure. Fly wheel doesnt make jack less stable.

Having a light weight flywheel does not make traffic difficult, having a light weight complete rotating assembly will but we do not have this problem.

Congratulations on paying good money for a flywheel thats 5 pounds lighter. There (meaning MSF) basically a stock flywheel machined anyways. If its an MSP flywheel then what you bought was a stock flywheel anyways.

It was lighter, i weighed them and there was a good amount of difference. I have the new one installed and it feels a lot smoother. So thanks!
