I'm now driving with the Escort Passport 8500......

I will keep everyone posted regarding the performance....

In 1986, I owned the original Escort Passport. Before that, I owned the original Escort. I was out driving late one night, no one else on the road, and I came over a rise, and got nailed with an Instant On Radar. Yeah! I was pissed. $92.00 ticket. Then; to add insult in injury, 2 weeks later, the Passport was stolen from my car while it sat in the driveway. $300 + the busted passenger window ($100) down the #$*%ing drain!! Ha! Hey folks!! That's the reason the Passport was originally designed - so you can take it with you (like bringing it in the house at night if you have no garage!). I was mad as hell at myself for that. And; I usually always brought it in.....Lesson learned!

Until buying the Passport 8500 this past Friday, I haven't used a detector since then. Have I gotten a ticket since then? One; back in 1989. I was coming up an entrance ramp off the highway, and a cop was sitting in a drive entrance about an 1/8 mile up the road; so before I had a chance to slow down from the 50+ I was travelling, I got nailed. Again; late at night.

What I'm going to say below, many of you already know......

For all of you that are considering a $300 detector (or $400 for a V1), or any radar detector for that matter, be aware that if you are traveling with little other traffic on the road, you are indeed, more susceptible to getting shot by radar. Instant On Radar is deadly to you if you are the only car in it's path.

The beauty of such detectors like the Passport 8500 or Valentine 1 is their ability to detect so far in front (and behind). So with that said; if you have any cars at all in front, they might be getting pulsed by Instant On, and your superior detector will pick this up and warn you in plenty of time. But, on the other hand, if you're travelling over the speed limit (alone), and a cop is sitting ahead, and pulses you with his Instant On - it's too late. Laser (Lidar) Radar is pretty much the same story. Both of these detectors I mention, do detect Lidar.

Bottom Line: Just be careful with any detector. They are fun, and yes, you want to go out and search for traps (part of the fun!!), but exercise caution. They can be very effective, and you can reduce driving time, but don't be stupid.

Are the (good ones) worth the money? Yes; I believe they are. Is it worth spending $300 for a Passport 8500 over $100 for a less expensive detector? Again; yes. Here are a couple of links & reviews....

im going to either get a passport or a V1. i think the V1 might be overkill. my friends have Cobras and they seem to work pretty well, so thats why i think a V1 might be too much. plus its what, ,$400? thats judt about a months payment for me, so i think ill have to aim cheaper.

Yeah, the only things the V1 has going for it over the 8500 are the arrows. The Escort 8500 is a better buy if you ask me.

Good choice! It is what I roll with! Turn on the voltage meter setting! (thumb)

Did you hard wire your Passport? For now; I am using the coiled cord, but I think I am getting the Smart Cord - Direct Wire. I'm just not sure how well I will be able to tuck the cord up the windshield pillar and across the top of the windshield. Thanks!

I plan on doing the same thing soon. It will be easy to tuck. Pirana accually has this done. The smart cord is about $10 from the Escort site.

Do you know if Pirana had to loosen any of the molding, or just simply 'tuck' the wire? Also; are you using the suction cup mounts on the windshield between the dash and rear view mirror? I am for now. Before, when I had the original Passport, I actually had it mounted between the top of the windshield and the mirror. It was a clean install. That way; there was only a little wire showing as it dropped below the molding.

I haven't looked for the fuse box yet. Do you know if he wired directly to it? I was thinking about the Smart - Direct Wire for $29.95. but yes; I see the regular wire is only $10.00. Thanks!

I kind of like the idea of the 'Smart' feature.

Cheers!

I could tell you exactly how to run the wires. I had to do the same thing when I installed my Auto-Dimming/Compass/Temp mirror. Not hard at all. The plastic piece on the A-Pillar is easy to remove. Just pull it in the direction of the passenger side. The headliner is easy to slightley bend down a little to tuck the wire over to the A-Pillar, and then down the A-pillar to you Fuse Block in your driver's side kick pannel.

Sounds easy enough. Thanks! Did you place the bare wire in a fuse slot (held in with the fuse), or another spot? If I remember correctly, that is basically what I did last time. I pulled a fuse, placed the wire in, then replaced the fuse over the wire.

I love my 8500. I have had it for a while now and I feel naked without it in my car. My friend does all the advertising for Valentine and I have borrowed his V1 on many occasions. I just don't like the layout of the detector. I feel more comforable using the 8500. We had the people from Escort come to our Miata club meeting last year and we got to demo all their detectors and got to play out in the traffic with the radar guns. Well, not IN the traffic.

Funny thing about the 8500 though, every once in a while I will be adjusting my mirrors in my Miata or my Protege and I will get the LASER warning to go off on my 8500. Others have reported this weirdness too. It is kind of freaky the first time you do it. I am not sure why this happens.

Jonny: Did you hardwire your 8500? That's what I am going to do with the Smartcord-Direct wire kit, and then I can use the Smartcord lighter plug in my wife's ES when we take it out on a trip, or whatever.

Cheers! :D

Greg,

I did not hardwire mine but I want to. I got a good deal from Escort after the meeting we had. They offered us $30 in free accesories so I got the hardwire kit and a vinyl pouch to carry it in. Getting the cord around the pillars will not be a problem but I have not idea where to attach the wires. If I could get a diagram on how to do it, I will get this done in the spring. I can then use my smartcord in my Miata.

If you do this, can you pass on your wisdom to the rest of us?

Thanks!

Actually; I needed my memory refreshed. I just got off the phone with Escort Tech Support. He told me to find a 12volt connection (suggested using a volt meter) in the fuse box, and connect the hot wire there, and connect the ground end to a ground in the fuse box. I had done it all before (1981) with the original Escort, and then later (1986) when I purchased the original Passport (yeah!! the one I mentioned earlier that was stolen!!! ha~!).

I should be receiving the new Smartcord-Direct Wire next week. After Linuxracr replied to an earlier post, I looked at the pillar molding that needs to be removed, and it appears it should pop off easy enough, as he mentioned; and the wire should route easily.

You will notice an open (storage) area to the left of the steering wheel; down by the fog light switch. That is where I am going to mount the Smart Module. That should work great.

Cheers!!

Not sure how the power end of the wire is. But that is how it should work.
