I'm moving to houston this summer

:
2001 Mazda MP3
Me and my fiance have decided to move to the Houston area. I'm going to be transferring to the Sysco warehouse there with hopes of getting something in corporate in the future and my wife, by that time, will be applying for elementary teaching jobs in the area.
Will probably be living in the north/ northwest area as Sysco has a new building for operations in Cypress that also has some job opportunities for myself.

Anyway, looking forward to it and possibly meeting some people as we will know NO ONE there, and fun stuff to do. There is nothing to do where we live now.

well i dont live in houston im down the road in san antonio but welcome to texas man hope things work out for you both...and hope to meet you in the future at meets ant stuff like that...to bad your not moving sooner march 12-13 were having the TX statewide mazda meet in san antonio this year...if your in tx around that time head on over

Awesome, I'm usually in the cypress area myself. CitizenPro lives on that side of town and were always installing s*** on my car. Would be cool to hang out with another Mazda enthusiast from the forums. Let us know when your finally settled in and I'll show you around the hustle town ;)

The area that I'm looking at North northwest what is it like. From what I've read seems like cypress is a good place to live, but just wondering some people's personal opinions.

cypress is nice. relatively cheap place to live also. plenty of things to do there and the school district would be a great place for a new teacher, IMHO. i would move there if i could talk my wife out of the dirty dena. pasadena for those who don't know. tired of pasadena, but my wife has all ties here. i do too, but i don't care.

been to virginia before and if harrisonburg is where i think it is, you will have a little culture shock in houston. spring/cypress will be more what you are used to, but midtown and downtown houston are very different. NorVa is nice.

I moved to Cypress this past summer and absolutely love it! I came from the southeast side of Houston in the Pasadena/Webster/Clear Lake areas and haven't looked back since. Schools in the Cy-Fair area are great, you have plenty of restaurants, a new huge outlet mall, lots of golf courses, and a nice shooting range right off the freeway if that's a hobby for you. The city of Cypress is growing at a rapid pace with home builders putting up homes like crazy, with plenty of master planned communities. The only downside is the horrible 290 traffic during rush hour, due to the popularity of the area and of course the rapid growth of the communities. Though that sounds like it won't be an issue for you and your wife since you'll be working IN Cypress. I envy you for that reason alone.....

I've seen the facility your talking about, its right at my exit which is Skinner Rd and that is not cool. I sit through an hour of traffic to get home from work and it amazes me at how bad it gets. It's causing me to search for a new job in my career field thats closer to home, and theres plenty of prospects off 290

Houston is a BIG city, with a small town feel.....you should fit right in. You may get a bit of a culture shock, but living out in the Spring/Cypress area should do you well. You can explore the rest of Houston and surrounding cities at your own pace...

harrisonburg is two hours south. south west of NOVA the ONlY thing here is James Madison. not a huge school but second largest in VA but they party like crazy. As did i when went there a couple years ago. As far as the culture shock i'm kinda looking forward to it. I grew up on a farm with over 300 acres and graduated with 117 or so people in my class. But my fiance on the other had is from Mountclair NJ and cypress sounds a lot like Mountclair, a very populated suburb of an even larger city.

My plan is to get a job there but if i don't right away i'm going to work at the warehouse, which if i remember correctly is directly north of houston. And i shouldn't have t worry about rush hour as i will be going into the houston area around five and coming out around three in the morning. or i hope it will be somewhat like that. but thanks for all the help guys.

Now i just have to figure out this property tax/ no state income tax thing and M.U.D.'s I read up on it for like 3 hours today and got the gist of it but still completely lost haha

that's about where I thought it was. I have been to the east end of va and to norva. drove a little through the south where my friends family lives. harrisonburg sounded familiar from the drive we took last time.

CitizenPro, I didn't know you moved hur.

Ken, The warehouse is at I-45 and Beltway8. If you live in Cypress, you can just head out the beltway to get there. It shouldn't be too bad at any time of day if you take some back roads. CitizenPro is right, traffic on 290 is deadly bad during rush hour. Good thing I work close to my house.

Home prices are redic here. Check out har.com. You can draw a polygon on the map and then specify price, rooms/bathrooms, etc. You can probably get a fairly new 3br house with a 3car garage for under $150. In fact, here goes one now...

Yea, I moved there this past summer :) You closer to 249 or 290?

HAR.com is definitely the place to look, that's where I found my house. Home prices are indeed at an all time low these days, and now is the time to buy.....interest rates are slowly creeping back up though.

I can't baleeb there's a Cypress Crew, lol. Been hur since '79 waitin on Ya'll!

I'm near 249 (at CNH and Jones). Good thing you're at the Skinner exit and not that clusterfuck spring-cypress/fry.

I used to drive from 59 and Weslayan to 290 and 1960. Took me almost 90 minutes to get home sometimes.

yeah, house prices are awesome down there. They are insanely high where I am. I've been looking on realtor.com and i'll check out har.com If she gets a teaching job somewhere in cypress we will try to get something near what ever school she gets a job, so she could have the option of walking in she wanted to haha. what is with property tax and city tax down there, i hear it can be pretty high, pushing like 6-7 percent in some ares

I'm trying to come down there in the next couple months hopefully someone can show me around.

Yes, taxes are high, but that's the price (literally) you pay for no state tax. har.com has a link to the estimated tax (in my experience their est is a little low) for each house it lists, you would just divide that by 12 and add that to your monthly mortgage. Unless you put down a significant chunk of change, the mortgage company will escrow your taxes for you. There is also homestead exemption which will lower property taxes on your primary residence as long as you resided there on 1/1 of that year. One of the most significant parts of the property tax is school tax. Pretty much, the better the school district, the higher the taxes.

If you need tax information for any address in Harris county, you can go to hcad.org. up in the upper right you will see a tab for address. Click that and enter the street number and street name (no street description like rd, st, pkwy, etc) and it will pull up the tax information for that address. If you notice on the link to the house I put up, the appraised value of that home is way low because it's fairly new construction and the county just hasn't gotten to it yet. If you buy that house (or a house similarly appraised) expect your tax burden and your motgage to increase significantly once hcad reassesses it.

If your wife wants to try for Cy-Fair ISD, I think the common thing there is to substitute teach in the district while you wait for something to open up. My wife knows someone that teaches middle school in CFISD and that's what she did.

Oh if your wife wants the option of walking to school...

$120k and 2x2car garages

That's right two 2car garages! and 2 driveways! Hope you like wood panelling though. This is literally across the street from an elementary school.
