Two quick spays on each wheel after every wash does the trick. I simply wipe off with a microfiber towel and they're clean in 5 minutes. Stay away from the harsh stuff.
EDIT: If you've allowed the brakes dust to accumulate, use Meguire's wheel cleaner (or similar product) beforehand. Don't let it sit on the wheel for longer than 30 seconds or so. The detergents are fairly strong and can eat away at the finish if left unattended.
Apply a good coat of wax for easy cleaning on future washes.
you could also try and downshift to engine brake. Just use the brakes as little as possible.

Poorboys wheel sealant. I've heard good things about it...supposed to make it a lot easier to keep your rims clean.
You can probably find it on detailersdomain.com or cargeek.com also
I took the pledge (lemon pledge that is) when I put my new tires on today. I was tempted to do it on only one side as an experiment, but forgot when I was in the process.

Any type of wax or sealant will make cleaning much, much easier. I forgot to mention that NuFinish synthetic wax also works well in my experience.

I will get a DIY together pretty soon. Seems a lot of people struggle with brake dust buildup.
