If you were to spend under 400 on a HU, what would you get...

Buy only what you've listened to and like...and of course...spare no expense if what you like costs more. Believe me...you won't be satisfied otherwise.

Is it really that bad in OK? Damn...If you take a cruise down to meet with the TX peoples, there are some good in that area. according to their website. Also, find brands you like and see if they have a distro locally. Image Dynamics lists a phone number on their site that you can call as does Eclipse, to find local dealers. There's a bunch of Alpine Dealers in Oklahoma City, and probably some closer to fort sill...umm...let's see...you can also check JL Audio's dealer find on their website.

I can't in good conscience just tell you what to get but I can suggest brands: Eclipse, Alpine, CDT, Image Dynamics, Kicker, Adire, JL Audio, Boston Acoustics, and MB Quart. Those are a good list to start with, if you can find them.

BTW...don't drop 5x7s and a tweeter seperate in front...just get nice components.

that first link is a component set, check it out. no one has told me if i would be able to get those speakers to fit, etc yet.

with the options you want, and at that price. i just bought a new Pioneer 4500-DEH. it was $179 at best buy and has all the things you specified in your initial post. don't count it out, i like it alot better then the AIWA POS i had initially. MP3 playback, preouts(2 sets) and remote and is also XM ready not that you need it.

should i start another post to get responses to my speaker questions? i appreciate everyones response so far btw.

I had a SONY HU -- which SUCKED the phat one

I wouldn't go with panasonic because they too expensive for the garbage they sell (expect the CQDF903U and up)

I'm not a big fan of JVC

I currently own a ALPINE (CDA9807) which proves once again to me that ALPINE is great

I would also recomend any Pioneer that is from the model DEHP3500 and up reason being with the volume up at high levels they are the best at providing the least distortion (w/ or w/o an external amp)

Someone else brought up Aiwa headunits. That's another one to stay away from. They are made by Sony... get the connection. :D

Alpine, Eclipse, Pioneer Premier, all good stuff.

I am still an Alpine fan myself. The Eclipse is good stuff, however a little on the expensive side.

Definitely avoid sony, if I forgot to mention it already- I had the top of the line sony es with the burr-brown d/a converter, and although the sound quality was amazing- unamped it was wayyyy quiet, and then it blew up in about 6 months- sony has been in the proccess of losing me as a customer for years for various reasons..

im pretty much set on the alpine 9813 thanks for everyone for the suggestions and help!

Just so you know the Alpine CDA-9811,9813 and 9815 are all supported by the i-Personalize.

Also, the 9811 just has a basic internal amp, the 9813 and 9815 have v-power internal amps and require a 10gauge fused wire run directly to the battery . If you don't want to go with an external amp for some small speakers the internal on the 9813/15 is absolutely the best I've ever heard.

I just ordered the 9813 from this guy on eBay who says he will also give a 1 year warranty on the HU.

Keep in mind the only online site that is an authorized Alpine dealer is Crutchfield, AFAIK. That means that if you purchase Alpine anywhere else on the net the Alpine warrant is not valid.

Also, to check out and compare HUs for your car go to www.crutchfield.com they have a great compare feature.
