Buying from a used car dealer?
You have to be very careful about that.
I recently tried to buy a Civic for my niece. I have visited about 10 used car dealers.
Most of the Civics ('06-08 ones) have "issues". Some were repaired, painted, dinged, etc.
Rarely, you can find a very clean one.

Think about this.
Why would a great car fall into auction? (That is where most used car dealers get their stocks!) Those are cars that
- got traded in and in bad shapes such that even the dealers do not want to keep them for their own used car department
- repo-ed. The ex-owners probably were too poor to pay maintenance on them.

Anyway, just a comment that may be a bit off topic. I would try to buy a used car from a private owner only. Checking CarFax is necessary, but not a sufficient condition. Bring a mechanic friends or ask to bring the car for inspection (by Mazda dealer), for which you usually pay about $100.
Eventually I bought one from a student who is moving abroad. The Civic was in very good condition and with very low mileage. Patience does pay off.

No, knocking is not a common issue. Many here does not have this issue.
I know mine does not...

I bought mine used last August (2009) from my work. I work for Moss Bros Auto Group and I bought my Galaxy Gray 2007 CX-9 Touring FWD with 48,000 miles. Up until right now there has been no issues (knocking on wood). I did obtain a Carfax report prior to buying it and I also knew for a fact that the one previous owner trade it the CX-9 in for a brand new Toyota Sequoia. Mine was and is exeptionally clean and very well taken care of. I had an advantage because I bought mine from where I work, so there was nothing they can hide since I have access to look up all information on the used cars in the lot/s. The previous owner bought it in Norco, CA and he lived in Chino Hills, CA. I live in San Bernardino, CA which is only about 30 miles from where the CX-9 was garaged and all the services, TSBs and/or recalls were performed at the Mazda dealership it was bought at. Also, just to help you out I bought mine for $21,400 out the door including, tax, title, license and fees.

BTW, no knocking on mine either...smooth as butter. However mine is a 2007 MY so mine came with Ford's Duratec 35 3.5L V-6.

Hope this helps.
