I took my exhaust off...

As one poster already said, fire is a genuine concern. I mean this very seriously. These cars run rich as hell and do not burn all of their fuel in the engine or even in the cats. The exhaust from the second cat is still hot a hell (literally). It is not unusual for these cars to belch a bit of fire out of the exhaust, as they sometimes do backfire due to the rich fuel mixture.

And then there is the toxic and potential fatal carbon monoxide fumes coming up through your ventilation system.

Also, I guess you know you have gained exactly zero power from this mod, as the stock exhaust is extremely free flowing, even up to a bit north of 300 whp worth of serious mods.

If you like the sound with no resos and no muffler, why not just experiment by deleting the muffler (the last part of the exhaust just before the tip, and replace it with a short piece of straight pipe? That might satisfy your craving form more . . . . noise volume and not burn the car up with you in it, or cause you to develop carbon monoxide poisoning.

Edit: The pix shows the muffler already hacked off. This would make it easy to re-hang the remainder of the exhaust and put a 2.5 inch extension in where the muffler was, if it is a sound thing the OP is going for. Wouldn't cost much of anything.

Besides the obvious problem with fumes, you have to consider the (very) hot exhaust gases which can melt and/or burn things that normally don't have hot exhaust gases nearby.

I read a post a while ago about someone that removed the exhaust system on his MS3. After melting some wiring (and getting a hefty repair bill), the exhaust system was quickly replaced.

save some money and buy a real one... and a lot louder doesnt sound better too. Personally, i HATE loud cars... and it is embarrassing for me cuz people inside the car will complain and most of all girlfriend doesnt like loud car.

Yep. I'm too broke of a college kid to afford a nice exhaust system.

But you can afford a Mazdaspeed3? Hmmm...

+1 (especially about the girlfriend bit. haha.)

I'm having trouble typing this because it's so damn funny but I agree you should put what's left of the system back on the car and simply have a straight pipe welded in place of the muffler.

Between the shot of the cut up exhaust on the garage floor and the vid ripping through the residential........damn that's some funny s*** dude. Thanks for sharing.

WTF where is Kain? He needs to read this and put up some funny s*** now.

how is this dumb? many people run open down pipes, so do i and my cutout does not have a down turn on it and i have had no problems.

Yes, is it that hard to believe? After tuition, a girlfriend, random bills, and my car payment, it doesn't leave me much money to throw at my car.

I understand that not many people understand what I did, but I don't see where the hostility is coming from. I did my research before cutting the exhaust off. I mean, it was impulsive, but I've been contemplating it for a while now. It's no different than an electric cut out (butterfly valve) or just a open down pipe dump. There's no wires to melt anywhere near the exhaust. I encourage you all to get under your cars every once and a while and learn what they look like. Where the exhaust dumps there is literally nothing.

I hate to keep bringing it up, but I have a friend and a few acquaintances with Audi S4s, and this is a relatively popular thing to do with these cars. Like the MS3, they also run rich. I've never heard of any of their cars catching fire or melting wires. Perhaps the fellow who melted his wires on the Mazda had a different exit than mine.

Regardless if anyone agrees with what I did or not, I appreciate all the feed back. I've just never seen it done before on here so I figured I'd post up about it. If it blows my car up, well then I'll have something more to post about. In the mean time, I'll keep on enjoying my budget exhaust work :D

No hostility from me bro. Whatever floats your boat. Just funny replies from some of these guys here. That and well....hacking off your exhaust was kinda funny and then ripping through the sub....well that was funny. It all kind of went together well.

The fire aspect is not limited to parts of your car by the way. Say for example you're sitting at a light and something blows under your car like a tumbleweed or a bag of burger king trash and parks itself in just the right place. You got a barbecue going on under your car.

Or maybe you roll into a gas station where some ass hat just overfilled his tank all over the ground.

Or maybe you park in your lawn. Not an uncommon practice in some parts of this fine country of ours, but if the lawn is dry etc.. you could start a fire.

You get the idea I'm sure.

Enjoy your free mod but maybe carry a fire extinguisher or put a bucket full of water on the floor on the passenger side or something.

Yeah, I always have a fire extinguisher, just in case.

As for the "tearing through the subdivision" in the video. That actually isn't a subdivision. It's a busy road with a speed limit of 55mph. Was it unsafe? Yes. A lot of those houses are actually small shops with parking on the other side of the house. Regardless, I broke some speed laws. But we all do. No one's perfect.
