I have a 2007 cx9 with 138k, I just had the motor mounts replaced, immediately after receiving my car, I noticed that after the car warmed up, the transmission would seem to slip between 4th and 5th gear. the mechanic is now
saying transmission problem. 3k repair. could it be something another then transmission? please advise.

Thanks

Other than a tranny issue, it could be a trans lube level problem or spent lube life. If the level is low it will slip and if the fluid has not been changed at 138k ever it could be past its usefulness.

Definitely worth a shot. If a mechanic told me I needed $3K of service without cracking it open to see what's going on, would be about the same time I would be getting a new mechanic.

Are you the 1st owner?
Did you ever change the fluid?
I can't imagine what the fluid looks like for 138K w/o ever changed.

Yes I am the original owner, and the car has been to every schedule maintenance available. I would think that Mazda would look at the transmission oil on one of those maintenance visits.

Can't blame you.
Transmission fluid is not on a change schedule.
You certainly can go back to the dealer where you have the maintenance done and ask them why the fluid was not changed.
I bet it is really dirty now....

i would be curious to know what the fluid looks like at 138K considering what mine looked like at 24K. either way, before forking over $3k for a new tranny i certainly would change out the fluid to see if that alleviates the issue. see my thread below for more of an idea as to what this fluid looks like with age:

Most likely the folks at mazda never played with your ATF while the vehicle was in for regular services. As the the fluid is a 'lifetime fill' per mazda under normal use. Ah but then there is the question as to what exactly 'lifetime' refers to; as in lifetime of the 60k powertrain warranty? projected lifetime of the transmission? Lifetime in the sense that i think of it, meaning as long as i own the vehicle?

Subjective all around, but just to give you an idea, if you ask mazda they will tell you that it is filled for the projected life of the transmission. Which will fall somewhere between the life of the powertrain warranty and what i take lifetime to mean. As being a complex and labor intensive endeavor to troubleshoot, transaxles are nowadays thought of as being easier to replace than repair because in order to tell what has gone wrong with the unit one has to remove it from the vehicle and dissassemble it, a labor intensive ordeal( ~6hours). And at that point ($450 in labor into the repair), one might as well replace it with a reman unit that is known to be functional than try to fix it and hope that your 12 hours of labor and repair actually fixed the issue.

Also, did your mechanic scan for any codes? Not all codes trigger a CEL. The problem may be a faulty VSS or something along those lines.

Sorry for not seeing your re-post Aquasport. Have the transmission flushed and the fluid replaced, it is worth a shot. Let us know what the outcome is too!
