Hi there!

I did it! I've been researching and researching the CX-5. I contemplated waiting for the new engine however the timing of things didn't allow for that. Plus, I didn't know the mileage it would get or the pricing. In the end, I test drove it again and was happy with the performance of the 2.0. I'm not a racer and the acceleration is better than my current car (Matrix).

I'm still breaking in the engine on the CX-5, however, I am noticing an improvement in the acceleration and the engine in general. Anybody else experience this as well? I was starting to doubt my purchase when I first pulled off the lot. Not anymore! =) Now, I'm looking forward to the improvement in fuel economy. I've also been pretty impressed with the handling. I'm cornering and handling turns much faster than I did before... ;p

=)

Yep, mine seemed to get quicker after a few hundred miles.

The braking and handling are probably what make it seem slower at times to people.

They just stop so solidly and when we are going places I've found myself going "woops, I wanted to turn in there" and then I realize that I can still turn in where I want to, because it can do it smoothly and safely because it brakes and handles so well.

The fun can also affect the mpg though as it does call out to be driven harder than most cars. I liked Car and Drivers comment along the lines of it doesn't just drive like a car, it drives like a good car.

One neat thing about the CX-5 is you don't feel the weight of the car at all while slinging it around. Did you know the driver's window has auto-up? That's a favorite little discovery I had.

Welcome and yes these cars are so much fun for what they are---I was recently on a really windy 40km road in the mountains following a new subarua brz needless to say I kept on his butt for the whole 40 kms---bullied him pretty good in some corners. Mind you I did take a few driving courses in the past that may have benefited me. :)

I've had my CX-5 Touring for about a month and a little over 1k miles now. I had of the same reservations as many here about the 2,0l engine's power, new-design automatic and the resultant power delivery prior to buying. So I test drove the living bejesus out of the car, using several (unwitting) dealers under all sorts of driving conditions. After the final hour+ solo test drive it dawned on me that the old Mazda adage "at one with horse and rider" applied just as much to the CX-5 as it does to the Miata. If you want to drive this car really well, you need to anticipate what it needs even as the trans and ecu adjust to your driving style. Basically, this means you need to take a very "deliberate" approach with the throttle, giving it just enough to keep it in or drop it down to the gear it needs to be in without just mashing the pedal. It's a more involving driving style than with a traditional fluid drive automatic coupled to a larger engine, but with a driving history of mostly manual trannys, I find it more rewarding.

Congrats on the purchase!!! Also i to found the acceleration to get better as well as the fuel economy as more and more miles were put onto the vehicle. I'm sitting at 17xx miles now.

Welcome xclaibur to mazdas247.com.

Some of what you are feeling is the AAS (Active Adaptive Shift) working as you accumulate miles as primary driver of the CX-5. It adjusts shift points to suit road conditions and driver imput, so increased responsiveness can be noticed.

Hi CX-SV,

thanks for the info! So... I guess this will be a continual thing? i'm in the engine break-in period, so the current driving style is not that indicative of my true driving style. For the break-in period, i'm driving varying speeds... i did about 200km on the highway, going to about 110km (70mph), and then coasting down to about 80km (50mph), and repeating. didn't rev it high, just to about 3500rpm or so. Also hit a bunch of different hills so that it could naturally hit the higher revs and different gears for hills, etc...

any other suggestions for breaking in the engine? i know this is a topic that's been discussed before (and i've read them...)

thanks!
