AutoX and track driving allow you to explore your cars limits in a safe and controlled enviroment. If you know exactly what your car is going to do and be able to predict it's reactions then you will be a much stronger and faster driver on the street.

autocrossing helps know the limit, but they're still going to be differences and unknown variabls...first of all, the terrain is different, even between parking lots (if only you could see my surprized look when my car slid in a parking lot yesterdy when it never would have at autocross) and you're looking out for other cars, cops, trees, fire hydrants, deer, etc. so you can't focus completely, unless you're wreckless (refer to initial d battle between ryousuke and sudo who can't drive against traffic). but yes, it does help a lot
