How To: Retrofit HID projectors into P5 headlights

he wants the FX-R's which are not plug and play like the Mini's

They are a PROPER retrofit, meaning it's gonna involve cutting and bracket making

as to the DRL's, you WILL need to deactivate them

Deactivate the DRL? hummm... Will a relay do the work?
I searched the internet to find a way to deactivate them and I found nothing but a way to transfer the DRL to the fog light which was something a bit too hard for me to do..

Hi,

If your going to retrofit FX-Rs and want to keep the DRL functionality, then why not go all out and do CCFLs as well. It takes a bit of planning but i found everything i need off this forum and others. The end result is amazing. Sorry about the pictures but they were obviously taken at night. I can maybe get some day time ones later.
Hope these work.

If you have any question feel free to ask and I'll help you as best i can.

Pretty nice headlight Shynobi101!
Ok so after thinking about it, is it better if instead I take the "Bi-xenon Morimoto Mini Stage III Kit (D2S)" in the Complete Retrofit Kits?
Is it pretty much the same thing than the full size Projectors?
I think the "Mini" requires less of a surgery to the car right? It's pretty much Plug & Play.. What's the difference between the Mini and the regular? Pro & cons?
Thanks Again, your help is helping me alot!

Having only worked with the Mini's, I can only comment on them, and its quite simple to work with them. Cannot argue with what you get for what you pay. Almost 2 years now, I do not regret going with the Mini's.

Ummm... i don't have any experience with the minis but as the post above said they look pretty simple and turn out great. What i had to do because of my planning was that i actually bought another set of headlights for cheap to work on while still being able to drive the car around. It took me almost a month to get everything done so you have to consider that. It might take others less time but it was my first time retrofitting so i made sure i did everything properly. The one small problem that i encountered with the FX-Rs is that they are quite larger. They do fit but as you can see i don't have the Pro5 headlights. The problem was getting the shroud to fit. I had to cut off quite a bit for it to fit nicely. The dimensions of the minis are smaller but i would think that since it is the same size lens, that the light output would be the same (I would think) especially since your planning on getting the D2S bulbs as well. BTW those are awesome!

Yes definitely the minis will require less surgery. I wish i had all my build photos but i lost them all when i wiped my iphone. :s

Hope that helps. Which shrouds are you looking at btw? Did you decide on CCFLs?

i have done 3 sets of mini retrofits in protege headlights, total time is less then an hour including the first set. Never did them before its just not worth paying someone else to do them. I used the same kit as Azuelke.

bikingpro5, you did 3 sets of mini retrofits in protege?
Did you have to do any cutting or was it just pretty much plug and play?

For the CCFLs, I just need to know how to plug them and I'll be good! I thing I'mma take the gatling gun or the Gti-R shrouds..

the projectors dont have to be readjusted or fall out do they? do you have to keep the reflective part or can you just get rid of that?

No cutting/drilling is required with the Mini Morimotos. There should be instructions with the CCFL's, but if not, it's a simple power and ground, so you can wire them how you want. I would either run them on a switch, or wire them with the parking lights.

I got the GTI-R shrouds and painted them black:

The only adjusting that needs to be done is aiming the beam, and this is done using the stock adjustment screws on the headlight. I have yet to have any issues with mine. As far as the reflective part... do you mean the projector bowl, or the reflective part of the headlight housing? If you speak of the headlight housing, you obviously still need it, but it could be painted.

Damn... that is soo much easier to do then the FX-Rs. I spent a few hours with the dremel cutting the reflective bowl down. :(

oh wow. im gonna get the minis then. the cutting of the bowl was kinda worrying me hah. that looks super easy.

If I was to get some minis and install them, could they be removed to return the headlights to stock? Or do you have to drill a hole for the projector to sit in where the bulb would normally go?

Curious about both the Protege5 and sedan style headlights :)

If you get the Morimoto minis, you will NOT have to drill anything and is completely reversible. This is true for any stlye headlight and this projector. If you look at the pics from that link Hank posted, you can see that the projector is attached to the headlight bowl by a nut pulling the projector tight to the bowl.

Thanks, just wanted to check as I saw a few project worklogs and people had to cut little bits off to get the backing plate/nut to sit properly.
I might buy some, i miss my projector light output :P

Edit: Found this pic of what I cut to get the FX-R to fit.

Yea, thats what I had to do to fit my MZ3 projectors....if I knew the Mini's were plug and play like that, I wouldnt have cut up my headlight in the first place lol
damit..oh well, I have a set of sedan lights that Ill retro with the mini's

I just order my Bi-xenon Morimoto Mini (H1) with CCFL.
Anyone knows how to wire the CCFL? I though about plugging them on the parking light. But the question is... How? Anyone has pictures?
